Price of Addiction ### to Foreign Oil |
At one time in the summer of 2008, gas prices average around $4.50/gallon in the U.S. It is currently lower now due to the recession, but economics predict that it will be over $4.00/gallon when the economy start picking up again. The best ways to save money is not drive at all and just stay home, sit in front of your computer all day long! Most of us can't do that because we must drive to work and we live in a society where driving is a necessity. How many miles are you getting from a gallon of gas? There will be no expensive cars in this post and none of the cars here will reach 0-60 in 5 secs, but these cars will save you money on gas every year.
Best Gas Mileage Cars - Top 10 List:
1. Toyota Prius: 48 City/45 Hwy, Base Price: $21,100. 1.5-liter, 16-Valve VVT-i 4-Cylinder engine with 110 hp, 0-60 in 9.8 secs. The most fuel efficient car on the market is the Toyota Prius, also the most demanding car in the U.S. Most dealers will charge you an extra $2000 for this car because it is rare and Toyota just doesn’t make enough of it yet. A small sedan, but roomy enough for 5 and it is perfect for those that drive over 100 miles a day to work.

2. Honda Civic Hybrid: 40 City/45 Hwy, Base Price: $22,600. 1.3-liter, 8-Valve, SOHC, i-VTEC® 4-Cylinder engine with 110 hp, 0-60 in 11.3 secs. Second on the list is a Honda Civic Hybrid, perfect for those Honda's fans that hate the Toyota Prius. 5 seats sedan with an electric motors, allowing you to save money on gasoline.

3. Smart for Two: 33 City/41 Hwy, Base Price: $11,590. 1.0-liter 3-cylinder runs on high-priced premium fuel with only 70 hp. Small, affordable 2-seat car that has a small engine, capable of saving you a lot of money.

4. Volkswagen Jetta TDI: 29 City/40 Hwy, Base Price: $20,000. 2.0-liter, 4-Cylinder diesel engine with 140 hp. Run on clean diesel and it is expected to hit the U.S. market by August 2008; the 2009 VW Jetta TDI actual performances may vary.

5. Nissan Altima Hybrid: 35 City/33 Hwy, Base Price: $25,170. 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder gas engine with 158 horsepower. A midsize sedan made for the Nissan lovers; a bit sportier than most hybrids.

6. Toyota Camry Hybrid: 33 City/34 Hwy, Base Price: $25,350. 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder with 192-horsepower, reaching 0-60 in 8.9 secs. If you love the original Camry, then you should try the Camry Hybrid because it has better fuel economy and it can be a big saver after a few years.

7. Ford Escape Hybrid (tie): 34 City/30 Hwy, Base Price: $26,640. 2.3-liter, 4-cylinder with 155 hp. Along with 2 other SUV, The Ford Escape Hybrid is the most fuel efficient SUV in the world.

Mazda Tribute Hybrid (tie): 34 City/30 Hwy, Base Prices: $25,310 . 2.3-liter, 4-cylinder with 155 horsepower. If you want an SUV that can save you money on gasoline, why not get this Mazda?

Mercury Mariner Hybrid (tie): 34 City/30 Hwy, Base Price: $26,955 . 2.3-liter, 4-cylinder and 155 horsepower. A small SUV that can be a little pricey, but it will make up for it cost in the long run.

8. Toyota Yaris vs Toyota Corolla. Which Toyota vehicle would you rather own? The Yaris is definitely a better buy, but it is smaller than the average sedan and it functionality is very limited.
Toyota Yaris: 29 City/35 Hwy, Base Price: $11,350.

Toyota Corolla: 28 City/37 Hwy, Base Price: $15,250.

9. Mini Cooper: 28 City/37 Hwy, Base Price: $18,700. Engines: 118hp 1.6 L I4. A small vehicle that can also be purchased as a convertible.

10. Honda Fit vs Ford Focus vs Honda Civic. Which do you prefer out of these 3 cars? All 3 cars are under $16,000 and they will get you around 30-miles per gallon of gas.
Honda Fit: 28 City/34 Hwy, Base Price: $13,950.

Ford Focus: 24 City/35 Hwy, Base Price: $14,395

Honda Civic: 26 City/34 Hwy, Base Price: $15,010

Special Car - Honda Civic GX (run on natural gas): 24 City/36 Hwy, Base Price: $24, 590. 113-hp, 1.8-Liter, 16-Valve, SOHC i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine. This is probably the most fuel efficient car because natural gasoline costs less than $1.00 a gallon. However, this isn't on the top 10 list because it is currently only available in NY and CA and it is very limited. You probably won't find a natural gas pump at your regular gas station, that is why Honda sells an at home pump you can plug into your home's natural gas line. A full tank (8 gallons) can travels approximately 170 miles and fueling stations are very limited; make sure to plan your trip correctly if you own a Civic GX.

What do you think of this list? If there are better fuel efficient cars available on the market, please list those cars and link to them. We only list cars that are currently available for purchase and has already been on the market. Cars that are in production cannot be on the list because it is not yet available for purchase. Your comment is very valuable and it will help us keep the list accurate.

I think the CAR business is so Crooked. I have a 1998 Honda Accord LX. I travel a lot for business and I get 30 0r 31 mph on the HWY and 27mph in the City. THIS IS A 10 YR OLD CAR!!!!I’ve been waiting for the milage to DOUBLE OR at least IMPROVE more than they have. That’s why is so CROOKED!! They have NOT improved very much for a “Midsize CAR” which is what I WANT and NEED for my work and personaly. The CAR Business deserves to go UNDER!!! Shame on them.

What about the toyota IQ
and the new fiat 500 ?
November 30th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
How can a Camry get better mileage than an Echo??? Yes, there ARE other agendas being fulfilled. The US market is not allowed to go to smaller vehicles with this kind of manipulation.
January 13th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
I have a ford 2008 fusion and I get 40 miles per gallon on the highway and 27 in the city. I had a focus for 6 yrs. I loved the car, good milege but, the fusion really surprised me! very happy with this car.

February 4th, 2009 at 11:00 am
Wheres the Aptera Typ-1.?has like 300MPG :O jk
February 5th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
What the hell happened to all the cars that got 40+mpg?? Toyota ditched the 42mpg hwy Echo for a Yaris that gets 35?? And what about the 80s model honda civis that got FIFTY mpg?!?! There is a racket here when you see car manufacturers DECREASING the mpg cars get. It’s all POLITICS people!! Brazil has been running cars on alternate fuels for YEARS–look it up! We must DEMAND more fuel efficient cars–we know they can make them and I dont mean untried hybrids with expensive parts that cost a fortune when they turn faulty–I’m talking normal gas using vehicles. We know they made 50mpg civics in the 80s–BRING THEM BACK HONDA!!!!
February 14th, 2009 at 11:37 am
yea, there was a honda in the 80s pulling 50+ mpg it was barely a 2 seater called a Honda CRX… although they were only built as manual transmission cars, they were worth it!
BRING IT BACK!
February 22nd, 2009 at 6:50 am
Anyone remember the 1977 Dodge Colt? Try 29/45mpg (city/hwy)!
March 4th, 2009 at 7:24 am
I drive a 1997 Camry LE V6 which to me is not the most fuel efficient car, however I love its look and feel. Which Toyota would by now come out with a more fuel efficient Camry. Not sure if the difficulty is due to technology or profit scam in collaboration with the oil rich nations or companies. Sounds fishy to me. I may be wrong but for now I don’t trust no major group. Their interest first and then then the consumer. Now wonder the will continue to go under.
March 20th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
Car manufacturers have always looked out foer #1 what can you expect when goverments prop them up and leave the other people to sink
March 30th, 2009 at 11:40 am
We (the buyers of America) will never get a vehicle that has excellent milage (50+) until we stop buying what is offered to us. In the 70’s there was a carburator made and tested with Ford (small V8) that got 100mpg. It was bought out my the auto manufacturers and shelved. The American buyers must stop buying the high powered cars that go 0-60 in under 7sec and go 150-200 mph. Legally, You can only go as fast as the speed limit, so why do we need them? Quit buying these souped up gas guzzlers with all the cheap but costly gadgets they put on and in cars and demand that they build more conventional cars that get good gas mileage. My 1955 Dodge Royal with a 318 v8 got 23 mpg city and 28 mpg hwy. Its all due to the FALSE Global warming scare. IF there is such a thing it is due to cutting down the forest in South America and to the enormus Radio Frequency (RF) waves generated by everything electronic that we use everyday. RF energy waves are heat producing. CO2 is not a pollutent unless you consider breathing being pollution. All living plants consume CO2 to produce Oxygen. If you want to decrease CO2 increase the amount of Oxygen producing vegatation. Give us our own oil and produce more gas and more fuel effecient cars. Also, since Natural Gas or Propane Gas autos are cleaner to run, make the manufactures build the cars with NG or PPG tanks. Its a no brainer. Eliminate the Gas tank and install a bracket to hold the PPG tank in your trunk and there available almost everywhere in the U.S.A.! Anyone who has a PPG Bar-B-Q knows where to exchange one at.
If they can’t do it let them go broke!!!!!

im 13 years old and love cars and in th volkswagon commercial the beeatle says that the VW TDI clean deisle is in the guinnes world record book for the highest mpg: 51!
July 9th, 2009 at 8:03 am
In response to christian kesler: The 2010 prius which has been launched ( I have seen them on the street) achieves 51 mpg city and 48 mpg highway. The commercial most likely has inaccurate informaion.
July 14th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
I consistently get 30 mpg in town and 30-34 mpg on the road with my 2005 Pontiac Vibe (Toyota Matrix twin). More amazingly, I consistently got 33-34 mpg on the road with early 2000s Chevrolet Impala’s with V-6 at the company I used to work for. I thought maybe they had a special fuel injector chips or something, but a neighbor has one and he claims the same. Why in the world would the companies not claim that kind of mpg when we consistently get it?
July 14th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
I drove a 2006 Z06 Corvette with 505 hp across the US and got 28.2 miles per gal. Big horse power doesn’t mean low MPG if the gearing is right
July 16th, 2009 at 9:58 am
Like he sed
The Bugatti gets terible mialage
the big engine is a non fixable problem
but if the gearing was more set for speed then
accel it would help a little bit

raymil is right
July 24th, 2009 at 6:21 am
Why is it that in North America the maximum mileage is so low compared with cars in the UK. A Volvo S40 Hwy mileage is 74.3 mpg. This is but one example, these high mileage cars are simply kept out of our market, why?? I’ll bet you can guess.
July 25th, 2009 at 8:16 am
YARIS???!!!
July 27th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
all of your replies suck
July 30th, 2009 at 10:59 pm
I easily got 27-37 mpg with my old Pontiac Fiero’s and why did Honda change the design on the 2000 Honda Insight? i’ve read consistent claims over 70 mpg!! and about that Volvo S40 i’d bet your thinking in KPG not MPG lets remember 1 mile is about 1.6 kilometer which would put it at about 46 mpg
now that I would believe
VW jetta has always done well with mpg my 1982 did about 35-40 (gas not diesel) after advancing the timing just a bit… My old chevy 1982 LUV truck got 29-37 mpg… guess fact is fuel mileage “technology” hasn’t drastically improved in the last 30 years lol… fact is that its just recently been a major consumer push … if it were a push say 20 years ago we’d all probably be driving either propane or hydrogen powered cars….
July 31st, 2009 at 10:53 am
how about the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid
August 8th, 2009 at 8:22 pm
I Got 37 mpg on a car that costed me 300$ and these new cars are like 27/town and 30/highway and our car is a Saturn
August 10th, 2009 at 10:00 am
My 1991 Chevy Berretta gets 35 MPG. thats almost 20 years old. You can’t tell me that there has not been advances since then. It has 240,000 miles on it and I will be sorry to get rid of it.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:05 am
I think the mileage has changed so much because of all the EMISSIONS requirements from the gov. I myself used to drive a 1995 Chevy Lumina 4 door v-6 & got 31 mpg on the HWY! Now some of the most fule effiecient non hybrids only get like 35? If it is not emissions regulations—then I guess they are just playing us for fools– anyway I believe it is the gov and the clean air act to blame for the big differences in the fuel economy. I would take the bus if I lived in a city, but I live in the country in a small town and do not have that option.
August 26th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
Tata Nano gets 51+ mpg. My 25 year old Honda Rebel motorbike gets 90mpg Highway, 65mpg city. A moped / motorized bike will even get better… 120-150mpg. All of these 3 sample vehicles will cost you far far less than anything on this list. You can buy a house with power pole and septic tank for $12,000… to spend $20K on a car is just super stupid insane. As soon as you drive it off the lot it loses 2/3rds of its value, because guess what, you just got schnookered. Electric vehicles get even better miles/per dollar, but you pay dearly up front for the expensive batteries which do not last very long.
August 26th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
You can get a used moped on Ebay for $500 that will get 120mpg, is simple to maintain, and a snap to work on. Or you can spend $25,000 on a honking SUV that gets 25mpg, that when it breaks down, there is no way to get at a single thing in the engine bay. On most of these stupid modern cars, you even have to take the engine out just to change the spark plug, or an alternator. They are poorly designed with everything crammed under the hood.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
Why, still, is there no plug-in diesel hybrid?

I drive a 98 Jeep Cherokee with a 4 liter! 6 cylinder engine and I consistently get 27 MPG! All you have to do to get better gas mileage is drive the speed limit and slow it down when accelerating! (no jack rabbit starts!)

Public Transportation is the way!
October 10th, 2009 at 10:03 am
I could imagine Hybrid owners, after paying a premium price for the extra mileage hope the price of gas goes up, so they can justify the purchase, with lower prices some short haul owners are saving perhaps $300 a year, it’s a long way to break even at that rate.
October 19th, 2009 at 4:34 am
I like to say that Choppergirl has pointed out the right things ! Thanks goes to her.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:53 am
It is possable to build a carb. that gets 120mpg on a V8 and up to =200mpg on 4-6 clinders! SO WHY CANT ANY MANUFACTERS DO THIS??
BUT A SHADE TREE MECHANIC CAN
October 19th, 2009 at 9:55 am
P.S. LOOK IT UP AND ASK WHY ! IGNORANCE IS NOT BLISS !
October 19th, 2009 at 10:20 am
P.S LOOK IT UP! IT CAN BE HARD TO FIND BUT IT’S OUT THERE!
THEN ASK WHY NOT ON NOT NEW CARS. IS IT A COVER UP? ITS A OLD CARB.
October 21st, 2009 at 9:49 am
Dog, U say that there are 120-200 mpg carbs out there and we just have to look for them..but you don’t say where, like they are “your secret” Do you have anything to gain by not telling the rest of us where they are? And what are you using on your auto? U see there is not much faith in those that repeat the ole saying, “somebody says that somebody say there is a carb out there that will triple your mileage” That pile of garbage/garage talk has been tossed around for 30 years..

This list is horribly wrong… My 1994 Geo Metro got 53 MPG… And there’s LOTS of diesels that get about the same or better mileage than the Prius.
November 8th, 2009 at 9:03 am
Hey dork-a-ramas SOME of you are arguing over kph v/s mpg.. learn the differences.
