2011 Nissan Xterra

There are a lot of Affordable Compact SUV’s in the market, the 2011 Nissan Xterra is one of them. This SUV is ideal for not just individuals on the go but for a driving experience that is comfortable even if it is off the typical highway road. This vehicle can get down and dirty with an edge.

It is one of the most recommended off road vehicles in the market but like any other SUV it still plays second best to a typical sedan in terms of the comfort although among its contenders within the same group, it does have more chic and refined driving dynamics. Ideally, SUV’s are meant for roughing it in the outdoors and the Nissan Xterra stays true to that idea.

Performance

In terms of the performance, the Nissan Xterra does quite well. In comparison to other compact SUV’s that have platforms that are car-based, the Xterra does have driving dynamics similar to that of a truck rather than a sedan which unlike the compact SUV’s would be more similar to that of a car which gives it a more refined feel. Also similar to that of any outdoor type of vehicle, the Nissan Xterra was designed to be sturdy and enables easy cleaning and is less polished in comparison to the rich feel of other SUV’s. Also, the fuel efficiency is impressive which gives buyers a tough choice to make.

This is a vehicle wherein you would not need to worry about having to place your pet dog inside the car and thinking about having to clean so much afterwards. It is designed for more sturdy requirements unlike some other SUV’s that cater to a much more sophisticated need that has a more chic and polished interior.

There are 4 trim levels: X, S, Pro 4X and SE which all, except for the Pro 4x, you have the option of either a two or four wheel drive. It is intended for tough terrains and it does indeed do its job well which unfortunately can be quite obvious when taken to drive on paved highways.

Exterior & Interior

The ruggedness of the vehicle can be quite obvious and for those that are not much fans of the off road terrain, opting for a car based SUV would be more advisable. For the exterior, its tough design is welcomed positively by most and it does outshine others in the same category. It definitely lives up to its rough exterior. As for the interior, it is quite basic and lives up to its reputation as an outdoor vehicle and has a very spacious interior area. The interior is more delicate and polished.

Safety

While the safety standards of the Xterra are fairly good and have been to the approval of the federal government. Unfortunately in terms of the vehicles reliability, like any other Nissan model, it does have a limited warranty that goes way too short when compared to most other automobile companies.

The Competition

So if you are decided in getting an SUV that can be used for harsh driving conditions, some of the other models to consider aside from the Xterra would be the Jeep Wrangler (MSRP $22,045; 15 city / 19 hwy). The Jeep, in comparison to the Xterra unfortunately this does reflect the quality of comfort that one experiences when utilizing the vehicle for commuting purposes.

Another excellent contender would be the GMC Terrain (MSRP $25,480; 22 city / 32 hwy) and unlike the Jeep Wrangler, this vehicle has a similar exterior to the Xterra in the sense that it can be used on the road as any commercial car but also has the ability to take on the rough roads.

Overall Rating
59 out of 100

What others say:

“Off-road ruggedness is the 2011 Nissan Xterra’s reason for being, and it shows it in a very cohesive package that looks the part, provides focused trail ability, and offers enough interior comforts for weekend warriors but not too much to scare the purists away.”Car Connection

“The automatic transmission reacts quickly enough to throttle inputs, but passing at highway speeds can be a bit labored with either transmission. The manual transmission feels as truck-like as the rest of the vehicle, with balky shifter and clutch action.”Consumer Guide

“ Serious off-road prowess; powerful V6; innovative cargo features; most livable truck in its class.”Edmunds

Highlights

The Lexus SC 430 has changed little since its debut in 2002. However, it continues to be impressive because of its sleek exterior and long list of high technology standard interior features. It also has a build quality that is set to last for the long term. A car critic even labeled this car as an “oldie but goodie” piece of vehicle. For those who have reached a point in their life when they want and could afford a luxury convertible, then they will know what that phrase means. It is one that best describes the Lexus SC 430.

However, not everything about the car is perfect. The backseat for instance has too small a space. It is cramped and could carry limited cargo. The 2010 Lexus SC 430 is also not as performance-oriented as those other cars in its class. Those who were able to test drive the car commented that the 2010 Lexus SC 430 is better driven for a “sporty grand touring” than for an “all-out sports performance.”

The SC 430 can simply be regarded as posh, pleasant and safe to drive. It even comes with a hard top convertible plus many other high technology features in the dashboard.

The Competition

If you are a would-be car buyer that is seeking to shop in the division of super luxury sports cars and would be willing to sacrifice sporty performance for an over-all great value, then the 2010 Lexus SC 430 is a car made just for you. Buy it then, since every other rival in its class goes for $10,000 more than the Lexus Sc 430.

However, if you are the type of driver who cannot do without the superior sports performance, then go look at the 2010 Mercedes Benz SL (EstMarketValue: $69,569; 13 city / 21 hwy) first which is a not only a powerful but also a luxurious car. The Mercedes Benz SL has 2 engine options, a 382-horsepower V8 and a 510-horespower V12. One has to keep in mind though that power does not come cheaply. The Mercedes Benz SL will set you back for almost a $100,000.

Thus, if you are not willing to spend this amount of money, go look elsewhere instead – the luxury sports car class. In this class you can find several with outstanding sports performance. There is the 2010 Porsche Boxster (EstMarketValue: $40,916; 19 city / 27 hwy) and the 2010 Mercedes-Benz SLK (EstMarketValue: $40,033; 18 city / 26 hwy). Both, however, are not as luxurious as the 2010 Lexus SC 430 or its other class rivals but both 2010 Porsche Boxster and 2010 Mercedes-Benz SLK are available in convertible hard tops.

Pros

  • Cool design of the power retractable hard top
  • Luxuriously crafted cabin with leather seats and wood trimmings
  • Impressive electronic upgrades
  • Impressive safety feature such as front, side and knee airbags for front passengers

Cons

  • Excellent choice for a grand tourer but not for a sports car
  • Shakes and rattles when driving though bumps and potholes
  • Limited passenger room and lack of cargo space
  • Reported visibility issues coming from the driver’s seat

Overall Rating
63 out of 100

What others say:

“At the end of its life cycle, the SC 430 still gets our recommendation for its folding hardtop, its luxurious cabin, and its effortlessly smooth powertrain.”Car Connection

“Even with the top up, the trunk holds barely enough for two on a long weekend, provided you pack carefully. The run-flat option omits the spare tire, to add a minimal 0.6 cubic feet–a poor trade for its harsher ride.”Consumer Guide

“ The 2010 Lexus SC 430 is getting a little dated, but its combination of a retractable hardtop, smooth ride and luxurious interior still make it a fine choice for sunny climates.”Edmunds

2011 AcuraTSX

The 2011 Acura TSX, classified as an upscale small car, currently ranks fourth on the top 10 list of cars of its class. This is according to recent test drives, reviews and analysis by experts and car-lovers. The reviews that were conducted are based on the following criteria, the Acura TSX’s reliability, interior and exterior design, safety and of course the engine’s performance. There were positive remarks and not so favorable ones but in general, Acura’s forthright effort in providing the riding public with an upscale small automobile like the TSX is still worth it.

Performance

Now let’s talk about the TSX’s engine and its performance. With the 2011 TSX, you can choose between the four-cylinder 201 horsepower gasoline engine powered TSX or the V6 TSX that can reach 280 horsepower and 245 pound per feet torque. Both way though, the Acura TSX is easy and enjoyable to drive however some critics suggest that it would be better if Acura also created a manual transmission TSX for the V6 model. As with the driving experience, automobile experts say that it is as good as the Civic or the Accord but it will fall short when compared to entry-level luxury sedans. In terms of braking, both the four-cylinder and the V6 powered TSX provide quick and controlled brakes.

Exterior

At a glance, the exterior design of this Acura is quite typical for most cars of its kind. Although the outer built of the Acura TSX is quite impressive with its sleek and classic look, most automobile experts think that the design is lackluster. Some people think that from behind this small car looks decent, however from the front the exterior is a bit tacky especially the “smiling” nose/ face effect. The 2011 TSX’s mediocre rating regarding its outer style is in a way compensated by some satisfactory remarks on its interior design.

Interior

According to critics, Acura made use of solid and durable materials for its interiors, which is quite notable. When it comes to coziness, the front and back seats are properly shaped to provide ultimate comfort. But like other upscale small cars, the TSX failed to provide enough legroom for taller passengers as well as foot space; then again this dilemma is common for cars of this type.

The interior features are remarkable. The TSX sedan has a multi-information display, which is easy to read and is strategically located beside the speedometer. It has steering wheel controls with Bluetooth connectivity, remote control, power windows and moonroof and it has a built in USB Audi Interface which enables passengers to connect their iPod.

Added Features

Optional features include a navigation system, an ELS Surround sound system for music-lovers and a rearview camera. Automobile press also noted that the sound system of the new Acura TSX is somewhat akin in terms of controls and performance with the Honda Accord. For cargo-space, this sedan is not that spacious as reviews revealed that if buyers would opt for a larger cargo space, the Audi A3 would be a better alternative. Lastly, when interior features are being mentioned, those who conducted test drives rather found it the controls or the navigation keys a little bit confusing since there are numerous knobs and buttons. However, as a whole, the interior of the Acura TSX is still better compared to other 2011 sedans.

Safety & Reliability

Those who will acquire the TSX are assured with a comprehensive warranty and 5-year rust coverage. Most of the accessories pre-installed by dealers are also covered with warranty. And last but definitely not the least, when it comes to safety ratings the TSX is on top of the list. As a matter of fact this sedan scored five in the crash tests that were conducted. This is probably due to this upscale small car’s safety features which include 6 airbag system, Electronic Brakeforce distribution, Anti-lock brakes, Tire-pressure monitoring system, Vehicle Stability and Brake Assist.

The TSX is also engineered to protect passengers especially in frontal crash incidents. The 2011 Acura TSX is certainly a good pick for small families who are more conscious on the wellbeing and safety of the passengers rather than the interior or exterior appeal of the car. In general, this Acura is still worth purchasing amidst its higher price tag compared to cars of its type. As it is, it is not ranked fourth for nothing, it is still worth getting.

Overall Rating
76 out of 100

What others say:

“The 2011 Acura TSX is the essence of what the brand should be: compact, light, efficient, and user-friendly—not to mention fully equipped.”Car Connection

“This premium compact carves corners with grippy assurance and little body lean. V6 models are subject to some torque-steer wander, but it’s fairly well controlled.”Consumer Guide

“Impressive number of standard and technology features; spacious interior; sporty handling with V6 sedan and wagon; excellent build and materials quality.”Edmunds

“The TSX is a pleasant and mildly sporty sedan. Its smooth engine, slick transmission, and agile handling make it enjoyable, but the steering is vague. The four-cylinder engine gets 25 mpg overall. The supportive front seats are well-shaped, but rear seat room is tight. A V6 is also available.”MSN-ConsumerReports

The 2011 BRABUS Mercedes-Benz 800 E V12 Cabriolet is a big and powerful Sports Car known for its stability at high speeds and powered by the twelve-cylinder engine mounted in the body of the open top Mercedes E-Class BRABUS. The BRABUS Mercedes 800 E V12 Cabriolet is considered as the fastest and most powerful four-seater cabriolet with a top speed of 370 km per hour. In building this car, advanced engineering techniques were employed to fit into the car’s engine compartment the 12-cylinder, 3-valve engine and its automatic five speed transmission.

Engine modifications were also made making the crankshaft longer and the pistons larger to match the increase in cylinder bore displacement from 5.5 to 6.3 liters. Much of the changes were done in the engine to maximize performance and at the same time keep the car operating at temperatures ideal for high speed driving. Even the tail pipes were redesigned to accommodate increase in the turbochargers’ capacity.

Only modern technology can create a great sports car like the BRABUS Mercedes Benz 800E Cabriolet. Carbon fiber parts were used to extend the fenders and accommodate the wider tires. The dashboard, center console and side trims were all replaced with carbon fiber to accommodate the modern amenities, gadgets and gauges like the 400 km speedometer, evidence of the larger speed capacity that the car can attain.

2011 Nissan Altima Hybrid

The Altima Hybrid is Nissan’s first Hybrid car. It is available in only 10 U.S. States (California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont). It is also available in Canada. Like its non-hybrid versions, the Altima Hybrid enjoys power with the utility of a sports vehicle. It is a medium-sized car fitted with hybrid technology. Its hybrid technology is licensed from Toyota so it has similar workings as the Toyota Camry with only slight changes made by the Nissan team in its hybrid design.

Specifications

General Info
Vehicle Type: Hybrid Sedan Base Price: $26,800.00
Fuel Tank Capacity: 20 gallons (75.7 liters) Miles Per Gallon: 33 city / 33 hwy
Dimensions
Length: 190.7 in. (484 cm) Width: 70.7 in. (179.5 cm)
Height: 58 in. (147 cm) Wheel Base: 109.3 in. (277.6 cm)
Curb Weight: 3180 lbs (1442 kg) Ground Clearance: 5.4 in. (13.7 cm)
Luggage Capacity: 10.1cu ft Maximum Seating: 5 people
Performance
Engine: 16-valve DOHC 4 cylinder Displacement: 2.5 liter
Horsepower: 158 HP Max RPM: 5200-6000 RPM
Torque: 162 lb-ft @ 2800-4800 rpm Transmission: e-CVT

Engine & Performance

The Nissan Altima Hybrid is fitted with a QR25 2.5 L four-cylinder 158 horsepower engine and an electric motor that adds 40 more horsepower for a total of 198 horsepower. The Altima Hybrid uses its regenerative braking technology to recharge its batteries so you don’t need to plug it in and recharge it. This regenerative braking technology converts the kinetic energy produced in braking and stores this energy in its Nickel Metal Hydride batteries. The Altima Hybrid’s electric mode powers the vehicle from ignition to start up, occasionally providing boost when higher loads are required. In between start up and cruise control, the vehicle’s gasoline-powered engine powers the car. For a hybrid, it handles pretty well and also gives a powerful ride.

Interior & Exterior

The Altima Hybrid is stylish and attractive-looking compared to some of its hybrid counterparts. It is also sportier and sharper-looking. It has the same basic configuration of a non-hybrid Altima: 4.84 m long, 1.79 m wide and 1.4 m tall with a wheelbase of 2.67 m.

On the inside, the Altima Hybrid is aesthetically well designed. However, it suffers from lack of space and expensive add-ons. It lacks trunk space since the battery takes up most of the space for this. Compounding the matter, the rear seats don’t fold down as it does in gasoline-powered Altimas. Just like its non-hybrid versions, adding optional features to the car is quite expensive since you can’t just pick and match features you want. You have to buy whole packages. Interior styling and upholstery is basically the same with non-hybrid Altimas. It also offers the same add-ons it offers for Altima sedans and coupes: Bose audio system, navigational system, Bluetooth and USB capability, XM radio satellite, telescopic steering wheels, power doors and locks, smart key and remote keyless entry.

Safety & Reliability

Safety features is the same as the gasoline-powered Altima. It is equipped with dual front air bags together with roof mounted side impact air bags, seatbelt occupant classification sensor, traction and vehicle dynamic control system, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Just like its non-hybrid version, the Nissan Altima Hybrid scores 5-4 stars in vehicle crash testing.

Comparisons

When compared with other hybrid cars, the Nissan Altima Hybrid’s fuel economy starts to pale in comparison. For example, compared to its 35/33 mpg fuel efficiency in highway/traffic conditions, Toyota Prius (MSRP $22,120; 51 city / 48 hwy) has 51/48 mpg difference while Ford Fusion (MSRP $28,600; 41 city / 36 hwy) has a 41/36 mpg.

The Altima Hybrid is more responsive than a Toyota Camry though its suspension system is not as smooth. For better comfort and performance, you might want to take a look at Ford Fusion, while for fuel efficiency; the Prius wins the contest hands down.

Pros

  • Sporty handling
  • Excellent Steering
  • Interior is aesthetically well-designed
  • The most attractive looking among hybrid cars

Cons

  • Limited availability (only available in 10 states and Canada)
  • Add-ons are only offered in expensive packages
  • Small cabin space
  • Low cargo capacity

Overall Rating
73 out of 100

What others say:

“The 2011 Nissan Altima Hybrid is a solid hybrid family sedan that also happens to be relatively sporty to drive. But it’s overshadowed by newer and more widely available competitors.”Edmunds
