1966 Volvo P1800

The 1966 Volvo P1800 is one of Volvo’s first successful line of sports cars, designed in collaboration with an Italian design firm that built the original prototypes.

The first model began coming out of the plant in 1961 and ceased production in 1973.

Only a few cars have passed the test of time, the P1800 is one of them.1966-Volvo-P1800-hunter-green-A

Engine

The original model featured the B18 engine featuring a twin carburetor. It was designed after the B36 V8 engine. It was actually downsized to 1.8 liters, producing 100 HP.

The engine was matched with a M41 manual gearbox which gave it improved fuel efficiency over the M40 model as well as a top speed of 110 mph.1966-Volvo-P1800-straight-lines-B

Exterior

The exterior of the car is typical for a sports car built in 1966 with the round headlights, slim body frame, and an extended bonnet for engine space. As with other models, the P1800 is a two seater.

Despite its length, it doesn’t offer a lot of storage and interior space. In the front, the manufacturers used a generous grill with chromed edges and chromed and thin bumper.

Interior

The original model features leather seats and leather elements on the doors with just enough space to accommodate the driver and a passenger. It has a fixed roof and the current convertible models are actually made by aftermarket tuning companies.

Three mechanical gauges are placed on the driver side with additional indicators located near the door.

Legacy

Volvo’s previous attempt to build a sports car resulted in a net sale of the P1900 at 68 units. The P1800 represents the exact opposite despite the fact that it was never mass produced. Volvo sold a limited number of P1800 over the course of 8 years with only 47,492 made during that period.

At that time, the car could rival with other expensive auto makers and few survive still today. One of the 1966 Volvo P1800 produced managed to reach 3 million driven miles.
