2011 Jeep Liberty

Tracing its roots from the wartime vehicles that have lorded during the 1940s, the Jeep is widely considered to be the first SUV. Nowadays, they are now a brand that creates 4×4 models true to the tradition of the original Jeep. Among those that are aiming to continue the tradition is the Jeep Liberty, a compact SUV.

Exterior & Interior

One of the strongest points of the 2011 Jeep Liberty is its exterior. Incorporating the rugged style that Jeep is known for. This is particularly appealing for the crowd that loves their SUVs to be those types that look like they are ready to rumble. In addition, this design is not just stylish, it is very distinctive. And then there is the optional Sky Slider. A canvas type sunroof, it is one of the most unique features found in the SUV market. Not only that, but it is at least 3 times bigger than the next biggest SUV retractable roof! For those that want their ride to stand out, this feature is a must try.

However, when exploring the interior, the Liberty might disappoint. Sure, it has basic equipment such as air conditioning, a sound system, and power windows, but it does pale in comparison against its competition. Optional equipment includes Chrysler’s Uconnect system and Bluetooth.

As for the seats, its headroom is adequate enough, but for those that are going to sit on the rear end, they are going to have problems with the limited legroom that it offers. And with a cargo that measures 31.5 cubic inches and 64.2 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded, it is adequate for most but still quite small for a compact SUV. However, it is compensated by the good opening of the rear hatch, enhancing optimal usage of that limited trunk space.

Performance

There is one engine standard for the Jeep Liberty. This is a 3.7 liter SOHC V6 engine. Capable of producing 210 horsepower and 235 lb ft of torque, this is considered to be adequate enough, but it is not exactly a fire breathing beast either. And then there is the fuel economy. Rated to go on an average of 15 to 21 miles per gallon according to the EPA, with the 2 wheel drive variants only marginally better, it is pretty good number for an off-road SUV but not quite up to par with compact SUVs of its size.

As for the suspension, it is drivable in off-road terrain, and it is a comfortable ride because its suspension can absorb contact more than adequately. However, its road manners are not quite that good. In a compact SUV crowd that looks for a bit of versatility, its on road performance leaves a lot to be desired.

There’s a lot to like about the Jeep Liberty. Its looks are distinctive, its interior is simple yet functional, and its off-road abilities are something that is appreciated considering that it is an SUV after all. However, a lot are torn about this vehicle. There is much to be desired when it comes to its engine. And it doesn’t necessarily excel in either on or off road performance. And to cap it off, it doesn’t have the luxuries, the luggage space, and even rear seat comfort that is expected out of SUVs of its size.

The Competition

The Ford Escape (MSRP $24,670; 21 city / 28 hwy), is one of many competitors that are staying ahead of the Jeep Liberty. Other’s that continue to lead are the Toyota RAV4 (MSRP $24,510; 19 city / 27 hwy), and the Honda CRV (MSRP $24,195; 21 city / 28 hwy). It would be wise to look at any of these compact SUVs.

As you can see here, the 2011 Jeep Liberty is quite a mixed bag. It takes a lot out of the table, and yet it brings a lot into it. This is more recommended for those that are more off road oriented, those that look for a statement making style, and those that wouldn’t mind its relative simplicity.

What others say:

“An unforgiving ride, unrefined feel, and lots of hard plastic spoil the Liberty’s fundamentally good packaging.”Car Connection

“The gauges are large and easy to read. Most controls are clearly marked and logically placed.”Consumer Guide

“The Liberty has clumsy handling but overall is secure.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“The 2011 Jeep Liberty can certainly hack it in the bushes, but it struggles on the pavement. Interior quality and fuel economy also leave much to be desired.”Edmunds

“If you enjoy the Jeep brand and its outdoorsy image, and appreciate a footprint easy to handle both at the mall and on the trail, the Liberty constitutes one of the better on-road/off-road compromises.”KBB

2013 Lexus GS 350

Pebble Beach, California, the home of the legendary car show Concours d’Elegance, held witness to the unveiling of the 2013 Lexus GS 350. An all-new vehicle, it makes some tall promises that it hopes it can deliver. A world class luxury car that combines dynamic style, a comfortable interior, supreme driving dynamics, and innovative technology, it is a comprehensively developed car that seems to be ready to set the midsize luxury car world on fire.

Exterior & Interior

The styling of the new GS 350 is designed to be strong and agile, integrating some of the styling cues found in the LF-A, the Lexus supercar. But this car is not just designed to look sporty; it is designed to be sporty. This is done thru a lot of modifications. An aerodynamic body shell, a stronger chassis, a wider track, a fast shifting transmission, and a strong engine.

For those that would go inside the car, they would be surprised that the cabin is much more spacious compared to the past car. This is because Lexus has made an emphasis to cabin space, as well as trunk space. This is why despite having virtually similar measurements; the new GS 350’s cabin and trunk are much larger than the model it replaced.

Performance

A 3.5 liter V6 engine with direct injection produces 306 horsepower, making it one of the strongest cars on the segment. Coupled with a new quicker shifting transmission, it can gain speed real quick. Coupled with a more solid suspension, the handling matches this new found power.

It is still too early, but it is safe to say that the 2013 Lexus GS 350 has all the tools to be the next big thing in the midsize luxury class.

2011 GMC Sierra 1500

In ranking the best full size pickup trucks currently in the market, the 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 is at number three. This is out of a field of seven on the list of the same category. Having undergone a redesign in 2007, it returned to prominence boasting of enhanced features for comfortable driving.

Performance

The GMC Sierra 1500 have five engines. Four are V8s: 4.8L, 5.3L FlexFuel, 5.3L, and 6.2L; and the Regular and Extended Cab trims can be equipped with the V6 engine. Of the two types of engines, the V6 is seen as lacking in power. However, with these engine options, a customer can maximize fuel economy according to their choice.

Handling the Sierra 1500 is typically stiff but for its size, it is manageable. Available suspension options are Z60 for street performance and Z71 for off-roading. This vehicle offers a top-notch performance in hauling up to 1,980 pounds depending on the cab and the box size.

Exterior & Interior

The external appearance of the Sierra is an imposing figure which is typical to full size trucks. Although some consider it outdated, the utility options it offers make up for it. Different cargo beds are offered in each of its cab models. An option that can be found on all cab types is the E-Z lift tailgate that is lockable. These varied configurations make the truck’s utility valuable.

The vehicle’s interior follows a minimalist interior design. This is indicated by the limited storage space for small items. The back bench seat allows the middle smaller portion to be folded as an armrest. Depending on the trim and model, seat features may be adjustable and reclining. One advantage is obvious though: the seats are comfortable and the interior is spacious.

Safety & Reliability

Safety test results vary from that given by the federal government and the insurance industry. Overall, it scored four stars in government tests. For specifics, frontal crashes earned it four stars and ‘good’ ratings, five star and ‘acceptable’ in side crashes, and four stars in roll over tests. OnStar and a series of airbags are available.

J.D Power gave the 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 a 7 on its reliability score, which is based on quality and dependability data gathered within three years of the vehicle’s production.

The Competition

The Ram 1500 (MSRP $20,810; 14 city / 20 hwy) has excellent handling, the engine is powerful, the interior is luxurious, and the storage options are smart; however, the V6 engine is underpowered and its reliability is questionable. On the hand, the Ford F-150 (MSRP $22,060; 15 city / 19 hwy) has a handsome interior and a polished exterior with an excellent towing capacity. It has a higher base price from among full size trucks and does not promise a comfortable ride.

From across the shores, Toyota’s Tundra (MSRP $24,435; 16 city / 20 hwy) offers multiple configurations in its cab models and its engines are powerful but it has a low fuel economy potential and it provides an uncomfortable ride. Next to it is the Nissan Titan (MSRP $27,410; 13 city / 18 hwy) which is characterized by a good handling and ride experience, gauges and controls are laid out effectively, and it offers a standard V8 engine. However; its towing capacity is low and it is rigid in terms of customization.

Pros

  • The vehicle is highly customizable.
  • The vehicle has various configurations.
  • It boasts a remarkable towing and loading ability.
  • The interior is spacious and the seats comfortable.

Cons

  • The V6 engine is slow.
  • The interior storage space is sparse.
  • The standard interior features are limited.
  • Additional standard features mean extra costs.

What others say:

“The 2011 GMC Sierra wins over truck buyers with lots of options for cargo and cabin space, in gas-only and in hybrid models.”Car Connection

“Being these are large pickups, there’s noticeable body lean in fast turns and quick changes of direction with the Z85 suspension. Z60 and Z71 suspensions improve handling only slightly. The steering is nicely weighted, if a bit numb, and the brakes are responsive with fine pedal feel.”Consumer Guide

“The Chevrolet Silverado and its GMC Sierra twin are well-rounded pickups with optional full-time 4WD and a generous payload capacity. Ride quality is decent and handling is secure. The new six-speed automatic slightly improves fuel economy and acceleration. Reliability has been average.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“The 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 is a worthy competitor among fresher rivals, bolstered by a wide range of body styles, capable performance and a comfortable ride.”Edmunds

2011 Ram Dakota

The 2011 Ram Dakota is an efficient and durable pickup truck. The color styles for the exterior are available in 9 shades, and in the Laramie or Bighorn models.

Performance

This pickup truck is powered by a Magnum V6 engine. The Magnum V6 uses a 4-speed automatic transmission and has 3.7 liters of engine displacement. It produces 210 horsepower and a torque force of 235 pound-foot. The Dakota’s maximum towing capacity is rated at 4950 pounds with a payload capacity of approximately 1810 pounds.

Exterior & Interior

The body is built using fully galvanized steel material. There are 4 doors on this truck. The exhaust tip and the side steps are made from chrome material. It is equipped with halogen headlights, fog and driving lights, along with cargo box lights. Other add-ons include the Dakota being equipped with a control feature for external light, a daytime running light, and Light-Emitting Diode brake lights. The wheels are available in 16, 17, and 18 inch diameter rims. The wheels are in styled steel, cast-aluminum, painted cast-aluminum, and chrome-clad aluminum materials.

The steering wheel on the Ram Dakota is made of plastic and vinyl material. The rear and front floors of this truck is covered in carpeted floor mats. Front and rear head restraints can be easily adjusted and has room for 5 passengers. The seats are made of cloth, vinyl, and leather materials and are carefully manipulated to prevent static electricity, stains, and the absorption of bad odor. Rear seats have built-in storage containers under them. An am/fm radio, mp3 player, and CD player provide the audio entertainment using 4 standard speakers.

Safety & Reliability

The Dakota has an overhead airbag and front-impact airbag for passengers. It does not support driver and passenger side-impact airbags. The body of this pickup truck is constructed in hydroformed frame for safety and durability. The side beams of this frame are equipped with a capability to accept blows during car crash incidents.

This process protects the passengers and lessens the possibility of fatal injuries. An additional security is also provided with the truck’s remote keyless entry feature. The truck can be made to unlock and lock itself by means of a remote-controlled key. It has a distance range of 300 feet. It also prevents potential theft because this key is capable of disabling the truck’s engine.

Pros & Cons

The capacity of fuel tank and its dimensions is one of the advantages on this truck. It has a large volume capacity for interior cargo which is approximately 37.1 cubic feet. It also has ample passenger volume capacity of 102 cubic feet. The disadvantages available for this truck are its low horsepower and torque capacity. The engine of this truck delivers low quantities of torque and horsepower when compared to its competitors. Another disadvantage is that it offers limited airbags for protection. It has no available side-impact airbags.

What others say:

“While it might have been partially taken under the wings of the new Ram brand, 2011 will be the last model year for the Dakota”Car Connection

“Steering has a direct feel and lacks typical truck sloppiness. Body lean is evident in turns, but is well controlled overall for a pickup. Four-wheel ABS is a worthwhile investment over the standard rear-only arrangement, though it should really be standard.”Consumer Guide

“When it comes to towing, the 2011 Dodge Dakota is still top dog among midsize pickups. Unfortunately, the competition trounces the Dakota when it comes to affordability and refinement.”Edmunds

2011 Carlsson CK63 RS based on Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG

The Mercedes Benz CLS has a strange vibe into it. With its swooping shape, it has managed to combine the defining characteristics of a sedan and a coupe all at the same time. AMG, Mercedes Benz’s tuning arm, has created the CLS63 AMG mainly to satisfy those people that have an incessant craving for speed. But still, Carlsson has managed to bring out something more out of the already monstrous CLS63 with the 2011 Carlsson CK63 RS.

Power & Performance

A comprehensive aerodynamic package has been equipped with Carlsson in order to further accentuate the attractive lines of the CLS and also to improve its aerodynamic efficiency. A more aggressive presence is done using a front spoiler lip and black accents on the grille inserts. Additional aerodynamic equipment includes a discreetly shaped rear spoiler and a rear diffuser. This equips the car in preparation for its more powerful engine. The same 6.3 liter Mercedes Benz engine is upgraded with 2 turbochargers to increase output to 649 horsepower and 900 Nm of torque.

Body & Interior

Forged wheels are installed in this car, allowing for weight savings of up to 40 percent compared to a same sized wheel. However, the interior leaves nothing to chance, with the finest materials such as wood, leather, and Alcantara combining to create a homey experience. Mercedes Benz’s elite construction combined with Carlsson’s superb attention to detail make the interior as spectacular as the car’s style and performance.

Among super sedans, the Carlsson CK63 RS has only few peers. Combining stylish swagger, a lovingly constructed cockpit, and earthshaking performance, it is a beast in a CLS’s clothing.
