Engine

The base G25 has a 2.5 liter engine that delivers 218 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 187 lbs-ft of torque. The G37, a 3.7 liter engine and delivers 328 horsepower at 7000 rpm and 269 lbs-ft of torque, the G37 coupe has a 3.7 liter engine and puts out 330 horsepower at 7000 rpm with 270 lbs-ft of torque and the G37 convertible has a 3.7 liter engine that gives 325 horsepower at 7000 rpm with 267 pound feet of torque.

Performance

The G comes with seven speed automatic transmission that has a manual mode. A six speed manual transmission comes with the IPL as well as the G37 Sport. The different models have different fuel economy ratings, with the G25 sedan getting the best mileage with 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

Many find the G25 a powerful car, but if you really want serious speed they could opt for the IPL coupe. With the power, comes great handling and confident brakes. The only challenge was that the manual transmission could be balky.

Exterior

The G comes with three body types, the sedan, coupe and convertible; and five different trims: the G25 and G37 sedans, the G37 and IPL coupes and the G37 convertible. All have a V6 engine with differing horsepower output. Reviewers appreciate the assertive and sporty looks of the Infiniti G. They find that it really stands out with subtlety, and not in an ostentatious way.

Interior

You cannot get around the Infiniti G’s lack of space for passengers and cargo, though people appreciated the craftsmanship. Leather seats come standard in the Infiniti G. One other feature that comes standard on all Infiniti G trims is satellite radio. The absence of flash and too much variety is what people liked about the Infiniti G.

It makes the car much easier to operate. The sedan offers 13.5 cubic feet of trunk space, which is average, but the trunk space for the coupe and the convertible is much less. The coupe has 7.4 cubic feet, while the convertible has 10.3 cubic feet, when the top is down, you get less than 2 cubic feet.

Safety

The G received good marks for safety. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it a “good” for frontal offset and side impact crash test results, “marginal” for the rear crash protection and “acceptable” for its roof strength test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it highest marks in the rollover test.

Reliability

J.D. Power gave the G an over-all reliability score of three and half out of five. The car comes with a four year or 60,000 mile basic warranty and a six year or 70,000 mile powertrain warranty. You can count on four years or unlimited miles of roadside service.

Pros

Many found the car really fun to drive. It’s powerful and zippy and its interior is well made.

Cons

Not enough space

Competition

The small luxury sedan segment is quickly filling up. Joining the G25 are the likes of the Volvo S60 (MSRP $31,300; 20 city / 30 hwy), the Lexus IS250 (MSRP $33,795; 19 city / 28 hwy), and the BMW 328i (MSRP $34,900; 23 city / 33 hwy).

Option:SLT-1 FWD MSRP: $28,510; MPG: 22 city / 32 hwy
Option:SLT-2 FWD MSRP: $31,260; MPG: 22 city / 32 hwy

Engines

The GMC Terrain is equipped with a 2.4-liter DOHC 4-cylinder SIDI engine which provides 182 horsepower and 172 lbs-ft torque, or the 3.0-liter V-6 engine with 264 horsepower and 222 lbs-ft torque.

The 3.0-liter V-6 engine is capable of trailering up to 3,500 lbs, and can use ethanol or gasoline. Direct injection is used for more efficient combustion, and a crisper throttle response, and standard variable valve timing adapts, to give the Terrain optimum torque.

Performance

The Terrain has E10 fuel capability, and is E85 Flex Fuel capable. It has a soft ride, independent, strut-type front suspension, a rear independent, trailering, coil springs suspension.

It is equipped with StabiliTrak control system, and the average fuel economy is 20-22 miles per gallon in the city, and 29-32 miles per gallon on the highway. It is designed for efficiency, and has a cruising range of up to 600 highway miles.

Exterior

This SUV does not come in typical cookie-cutter fashion. It has a rugged, truck-like style which begins with a charcoal grill and chrome surround. It comes with halogen, projector, daytime-running headlights, deeply tinted glass, and heated outside mirrors.

It has a rear manual-lift gate in back, with a spare tire and wheel. The bold lines of the body, and 17-inch aluminum wheels are offset by refined color details and interior. The colors available are black, carbon black, silver, gold, white, mocha, blue, gray, and merlot.

Interior

The Terrain has more than enough luxury features such as a 7-inch color, HD TouchScreen radio, available with color touch navigation. A Rear seat entertainment system is provided, with dual 8-inch, flip-up, LCD screen, video input jacks for gaming systems, and wireless headphones and remote.

Bluetooth connectivity is provided in the Driver Information Center, and rear-vision camera, and ambient lighting are also provided. Features available are the Pioneer 8-speaker sound system, single-zone automatic climate control, 8-way power, adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, power sunroof, remote starter, and power lift-gate.

The ultrasonic rear park assist is available that detects objects which are up to 8 feet away. OnStar is available with a six-month trial subscription. GMC offers a 3-year or 36,000 mile, 5-year or 100,000 mile powertrain warranty, with roadside assist, and replacement transportation provided.

Comparisons

The 2012 Terrain is a good alternative to the Toyota RAV4 (MSRP $22,650; 22 city / 28 hwy), because of its more rugged look, but the RAV4 has more interior space, with an optional third row of seating, for two more passengers. The Chevrolet Equinox (MSRP $23,530; 22 city / 32 hwy) is a good choice as well, it has similar room and cargo space, but does not include the rearview camera the Terrain does. The Terrain is larger than the Ford Escape, but smaller than the Nissan Murano and Ford Edge in exterior size.

The pros, are the Terrain’s fuel economy, versatility with rear-seat sliding, it is a very quiet ride, and includes a standard rearview camera. The cons would be the more expensive price, and that the V-6 engine is not particularly as powerful as other SUV models.

The Terrain has a different and bolder look, luxurious features and larger interior. The GMC Terrain is a smaller, more manageable SUV, and would be suitable for those with many family members who want a crossover with big-truck styling, which is small, maneuverable, and loaded with features.

The versatility of the Terrain in its ability to use gas/ethanol gives it an obvious advantage over the Ford Edge (MSRP $27,770; 19 city / 27 hwy), Hyundai Santa Fe (MSRP $23,225; 20 city / 28 hwy), and the Nissan Murano (MSRP $29,960; 18 city / 24 hwy).

Overall Rating
74 out of 100

What others say:

“A few cockpit foibles aside, the Terrain delivers comfortable seating for five, and a high level of interior quality.”Car Connection

“Terrain is hampered by a wide turning circle that complicates parking-lot maneuvers. Otherwise, this crossover is competent and car-like.”Consumer Guide

“The Terrain straddles the small and midsized SUV categories. It has a taut yet supple and controlled ride, with responsive and secure handling.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“With the proliferation of Bluetooth-enabled devices becoming increasingly more commonplace, the 2012 GMC Terrain SUV’s impressively quiet cab is an unexpected bonus. Extensive use of acoustic laminated glass, active noise-cancellation technology, and triple-sealed doors culminate to create an interior that is nearly Lexus-like at highway speed.”KBB

“Quiet and attractive cabin; sophisticated ride; strong crash test scores; roomy backseat; plenty of standard and optional features; good fuel economy…Cargo space could be more generous; compromised visibility; numb steering.”Edmunds

Option:GT 3.8L V6 A/T MSRP: $29,089; MPG: 17 city / 25 hwy

Engines

The Eclipse GS, SE, and GS Sport trims use a 2.4-liter, Inline 4 engine, producing 162 horsepower at 6,000rpm. The GS, and GS Sport, are five-speed automatic transmissions, and the SE, is a new four-speed transmission. The Eclipse GT is equipped with a 3.8-liter, V-6, 265 horsepower at 5750 rpm, with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Performance

The Eclipse Sport Suspension provides better handling, by lowering the suspension. The Eclipse engine trails other sports cars in its category, but the V-6 engine offers good acceleration. The Eclipse GT trim provides better engine performance, but is plagued by the car pulling to one side when accelerating.

The Eclipse has sporty details, but the power is lacking. This may be a good car for those who want a sporty design, but do not need a powerful engine. The Eclipse can achieve 20 mpg in the city, and 28 mpg on the highway, and the GT trim gets 17 mpg in the city, and 25 mpg on the highway fuel mileage.

Exterior

The Eclipse has a design inspired by sports cars from years past, with a dynamic body and aggressive, low stance. It features scooped air intakes in the front, with high-intensity discharge headlights, and clear-chrome tail lights. Its sleek lines and dual exhaust are complimented with its striking 18-inch ten-spoke wheels. The Eclipse also features its classic black-out roof, as was featured on the very first Eclipse model. Exterior colors available are Sunset Pearlescent, red, black, silver, white, and gray.

Interior

The interior features are comfortable with racing-inspired bucket seats for the driver and front passenger. Air conditioning, cruise, power windows and locks, keyless entry, six-speaker compact-disc stereo, and auxiliary input come as standard features. The GS Sport trim adds a sunroof, heated leather front seats, and a Rockford Fosgate, 650-watt stereo system. There is 15.7 cubic feet of cargo space available and a second row of seats for two more passengers.

Safety & Reliability

Mitsubishi’s steel supporting construction with a rigid uni-body chassis, improves safety, as well as improved cornering. The Eclipse is equipped with an anti-lock braking system, with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), and Active Stability Control (ASC), to detect slipping, loss of traction, or loss of control.

Six standard airbags are supplied, and are front-seat mounted. Additional side impact and side curtain airbags also come standard for safety. The 18-inch tires allow for more grip for the road, and Mitsubishi offers a limited powertrain warranty of ten years, or 10,000 miles, emphasizing its belief in Eclipse reliability.

Pros

The Eclipse is a great looking car, with an aggressive, sporty look. It has comfortable seats, and the V-6 engine offers good acceleration and a smooth ride. It is affordable, and has a lengthy powertrain warranty. It would be a safe and reliable commuter car that goes with its sporty look any time. The exterior design is eye-catching, however, for this category and price range, some may find themselves looking elsewhere.

Cons

The Eclipse lacks performance, and its rivals offer a more thrilling ride. The front-wheel drive is uncommon for cars in this category, and the handling is not as engaging. It is a noisy ride, has a cramped back seat, and there is poor visibility. The material used for the interior are made of plastic, and inferior to other models, and the controls are hard to reach. The Mazda Miata (MSRP $23,470; 22 city / 25 hwy) offers more cargo space, and a more powerful engine, at about the same price.

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe (MSRP $23,500; 20 city / 23 hwy) also has a low price, more spacious back seats, more engine horsepower, and rear-wheel drive. The Ford Mustang (MSRP $22,310; 19 city / 22 hwy) and Chevrolet Camaro (MSRP $23,280; 20 city / 28 hwy) are less expensive than the GT V6. No one seems to have any issues with the exterior look of the Eclipse.

The Eclipse has also been compared to few other makes that include the Honda Civic Coupe (MSRP $20,655; 32 city / 39 hwy), the Kia Forte Koup (MSRP $18,600; 26 city / 32 hwy), and the Scion tC (MSRP $19,575; 26 city / 31 hwy).

The 2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse is really is an eye-catching car, but for the money, people who want to buy a sportscar, are looking for a more powerful engine under the hood.

Overall Rating
57 out of 100

What others say:

“Lacking some refinement, and pretty big for a sporty car, the Eclipse nonetheless could be fun to drive, especially with its available V-6 drivetrain.”Car Connection

“Not quite as sporty as its looks imply, but any Eclipse corners with ample grip and minimal body lean. Convertibles are impressively solid, suffering no noticeable handling penalty.”Consumer Guide

“Despite the sporty styling, the Eclipse isn’t particularly fun to drive. The handling lacks agility, but the car is ultimately secure.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“After more than two decades on the market and four generations, 2012 marks the final year for the Mitsubishi Eclipse coupe and Spyder (convertible).”KBB

“Comfortable front seats; relatively roomy cargo area…High price; convertible’s poor outward visibility; sluggish acceleration with GS models; torque steer with GT; small backseat; no telescoping wheel; lackluster interior quality.”Edmunds
