The Oldsmobile division of General Motors introduced the Oldsmobile Alero for the 1999 model year in 1998. The Alero became a replacement of the two previous Oldsmobile lines, the Achieva and Cutlass. Production of the Alero started on April 1998 and the vehicle was built in Oldsmobile’s plant Lansing, Michigan.
The Alero was the last of Oldsmobile’s compact cars. It was also the last Oldsmobile vehicle that was phased out, when the last of the Aleros were produced on April 2004. Two models were available for the Alero – a two-door coupé and a four-door sedan. Its chassis and engine was shared with the other lines of the GM family, namely the Pontiac Grand Am and the N body sedan. The trim levels for the Oldsmobile Aleros were the base model GX, the mid-level trim GL with levels 1, 2, and 3, and the high-end GLS trim. During its 5 year run, changes included the options for engines and the daytime running lights, which were changed from high to low beam.
