Oldsmobile 442 150

The Oldsmobile 442, pronounced as four-four-two was a muscle car made available as early as 1964 and was last seen in 1991. Manufactured General Motor’s Oldsmobile division, it debuted as an option package for two Oldsmobile models in the United States, the F-85 and Cutlass for the 1964 model year.

For four years, from 1968 to 1971, the 442 became a separate line, and was returned to being a model option in the middle of the 1970s. The 442 brand was revived by Oldsmobile in the 1980s. In its last year in 1991, it was back as an option package for the new Cutlass with front-wheel drive. The 442 name was derived from its mechanical features, which in 1964 were: Four Barrel Carburetion, Four on the Floor and Dual Exhausts. Before it was discontinued in 1991, the Oldsmobile FWD 442 still had a significant meaning, as it meant four cylinders, four valves, and two camshafts. The Oldsmobile 442 figured in pop culture, particularly in pop songs, with appearances in Primus’ “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” and the Blondie song “Detroit 442”.
