2011 Acura ZDX

When it comes to luxury midsized SUV’s, the 2011 Acura-ZDX, is a good option. According to recent analysis done by automobile critics and experts, if you are looking for a sophisticated, all-wheel drive vehicle sans the other functions of larger SUV’s then the Acura ZDX is a perfect choice. This so-called family-hauler is indeed compatible for those small families who travel out of town a lot but makes it a point to only bring things that are necessary. Why? Because the Acura –ZDX drives smoothly making it comfortable for long-distance traveling however it is not roomy enough for backpackers’ bulky luggage.

Performance

Performance-wise, the ZDX drives efficiently even in sharp curves and terrains. This all-wheel drive precious sport coupe, as Acura categorizes it, is powered by a V6 engine making it more effective especially during long drives compared to sedans. In terms of safety, Acura has always made it a point that their vehicles are engineered to provide maximum protection to its passengers during frontal crashes or side collisions. The 2011 ZDX is equipped with an outstanding airbag system, Trailer Stability and Brake Assist plus Vehicle Stability Assist to provide optimal traction control.

Interior

The interior of the ZDX has small back seat space relative to its interior cargo which is also a bit restricted. Although the front seats are cozy and the seats’ shape and make are comfortable to sit on especially during long trips, critics can not ignore the lack of space for adult-sized passengers of its rear seats. This particular limitation however is offset by the material that the whole interior of the ZDX is made of.

The leather coverings and detailed stitching, as well as the strategic and ergonomic location of the beautifully designed dashboard and center stack or the Monolith makes one feel the difference of riding in a luxury vehicle. The carpet, the cabin and the overall interior design are also being commended by the auto press. For an additional cost, one you can enjoy the technology package add-on to the Acura-ZDX which includes XM satellite radio, a rearview camera, a smart-navigation system which has voice recognition and user-friendly navigation-keys.

Exterior

Now, talking about its exterior design, most reviewers and test drivers of the 2011 ZDX agree that the style of this crossover/ midsize SUV is certainly well-thought of. The curves and the angles from the front up to the rear end are robust enough to exemplify the vehicle’s strong performance but at the same time refined to imply elegance. The 2011 Acura-ZDX’s cutting-edge exterior certainly has that second-look appeal that other car under the midsize SUV classification doesn’t have.

Added Features

Not only that, this state-of-the-art package also includes a high-end audio system, real-time traffic plus weather report and of course a 15 GB media storage system. The dashboard, as some people attest is a bit cluttered with buttons but drivers of the ZDX will surely be able to learn each buttons’ functions effortlessly in time. When it comes to being utilitarian, it is not a good option especially in comparison to the Acura MDX obviously because it lacks enough space for bags or luggage. It is also behind in terms of cargo capacity compared to Lexus RX 350 (MSRP $39,075; 18 city / 25 hwy) and the Cadillac SRX (MSRP $34,615; 18 city / 25 hwy).

Reliability

Based on the Initial Quality Study and the Vehicle Dependability study made by J.D. Power and Associates, the Acura ZDX rated 8 over 10 which mean that the warranty that this luxury vehicle provides is considered above average making it worth acquiring. As a matter of fact Acura provides a six-year powertrain warranty and a 50,000 –mile limited warranty.

The 2011 Acura-ZDX is able to surpass the standards of a sports coupe based on style and is definitely a performer in its own right. Although it is a bit costly, just like other luxury midsize SUV’s, people will still get the value of their money in the ZDX.

What others say:

“The Acura ZDX has one of the most perplexing packages of any vehicle. It’s gorgeous, thanks to all the voluptuous, curved sheetmetal, and the design complexity in its wavelike side crease that compliments the roofline.”Car Connection

“Overall, ZDX is fairly car-like with well-checked body lean and decent cornering ability; it deftly handles narrow twisties.”Consumer Guide

“Is it an overweight hatchback or a sporty SUV? In either case, the 2011 Acura ZDX is an automotive oddity that compromises in the wrong places.”Edmunds

“The ZDX is a four-door luxury SUV with coupe styling. The front seats are roomy, but the second row is snug. Folding the second row expands the cargo area. The low roof and small windows compromise visibility. The smooth and powerful 3.7-liter V6 is mated to a six-speed automatic.”MSN-Consumer Reports

2011 BMW 3-Series Wagon

Station wagons have always been about utility. It has the size and seating arrangements of a midsize car and yet it has a bit of extra in terms of boot space. However, most people think that this type of a car is a bit too boring. However, once in a while, wagons like the 2011 BMW 3 Series Wagon come around and steal the show.

The BMW 3 Series Wagon is part of the 5th generation of BMW 3 series cars. It is one of the 4 body types available for this car. In 2009, it got a set of modifications together with the sedan. The grille, hood, front and rear lights, and trunk were modified to create a new look in 2009. These changes were generally well received.

Performance

The 2011 BMW 3 Series Wagon is available in both rear wheel drive and 4 wheel drive, but only one engine is in the offering. It is the 3.0 inline-6 engine that has peak production of 230 horsepower and 200 lb/ft of torque. It might not sound much power but it is definitely more than enough. This is mated with a 6 speed manual transmission, with 6 speed automatic gearbox optional equipment. Add to that excellent suspension and brakes, plus the confidence inspiring grip of the xDrive 4 wheel drive system, and you’re going to have a blast driving this car. It has excellent safety tools too: it passed a lot of crash ratings with flying colors, and the stability control system simply works amazing.

Exterior & Interior

The 2011 BMW 3 Series Wagon has all the tools that made the 3 series line such a big hit through the years. It is a versatile car that managed to combine 3 coveted characteristics: luxury, performance, and practicality. The exterior is typical BMW: sleek and stylish yet still opinions about its looks are divided. It’s one of those cars that function defined its form. Even better, the perceived weaknesses of the styling were now mostly corrected. Inside the car, you are bound to find the typical BMW style of ergonomics.

The materials used in the vehicle: the leather, the wood trim, the analog gauges, everything gives the car a classy and elegant feel while looking every bit as durable. And it has space that only a wagon can provide: it has up to 60 cubic feet of luggage space to throw in with the typical BMW 3 series experience.

Pros & Cons

There are a host of strong points for the 2011 BMW 3 Series Wagon. The best traits that it has are something it shares with the entire 3 series line: the fun-to-drive factor. It has incredible performance potential, with sharp handling that makes you forget that you are driving a wagon and a motor that can push it on to any occasion. Also, the interior is exceptionally built. It is built cozy while being still performance oriented. And really, you can’t argue with its safety features. It is a true 3 Series car, with the additional boot room of a wagon.

However, the same problems that plagued this generation of the 3 Series carried over to the wagon. First on the list is the cramped rear passenger area. It remained unsolved and continues to be a nightmare for full sized people. Also, the suspension, while fine tuned for cornering at high speeds, may be found too harsh by some for daily driving.

The BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon just might be the best in the business in its class. And it’s for a good reason. It has managed to combine performance with drivability. It is a precision built machine, and it’s worth every cent of the price to own it. Its closest competitors include the Cadillac CTS Wagon (MSRP $38,465; 18 city / 27 hwy) and the Audi Avant A4 Quattro (MSRP $36,300; 21 city / 27 hwy).

Performance

Coming with improved 3.6L six cylinder engine to provide ample power and deliver excellent fuel mileage, the Grand Caravan now has 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. This is mated with a crisp shifting six-speed automatic transmission.

Exterior

After undergoing several facelifts, the Grand Caravan has finally achieved a look that is fitting especially on urban streets. Complimenting the great driving dynamics is its more aggressive exterior design. Standard in this minivan are polished aluminum 17-inch wheels and modified bumper. The front end now comes with altered body grille and redesigned hood. Also added are vertical-stack LED tail lamps. The Dodge Grand Caravan is all about providing its passengers with comfort, as well. Displayed inside are fine sufficient seats.

Interior & Trims

The Grand Caravan has three trims. For the first trim called Express, keyless entry, multifunction steering wheel and Stow ‘N Go for fold-away second- and third-row seats are included. Incorporated in the Main street trim are power rear windows. And the add ons in third trim also known as the Crew are power sliding doors, flexible pedals, three zone automatic climate control and an exceptional 30-gig hard drive.

Technological features such as nine-speaker 506-watt sound system, satellite radio, navigation system with real time traffic, and Bluetooth compatibility also abound in this minivan. The instrument panel and dashboard are also redesigned for more elegant interior. Also an option is the centermost console for a bigger storage space. Its blue-green lighting allows the person to conveniently find objects at night. The Dodge Grand Caravan will soon be featuring its new trim- the Grand Caravan R/T.

Safety & Reliability

Aside from safety features like airbags for protection against side impact collisions, antilock brakes for sudden hard braking, traction control to better manage slippery surfaces, knee-blocking airbag and child seat, ParkSense and ParkView rearview cameras are also integrated in the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan for secured backing up.

It also passed insurance industry tests such as frontal crash tests and side-impact crash tests. It was also awarded by the federal government a positive rollover rating. In terms of reliability, J.D. Power gave the Grand Caravan a score of 6.0 out of 10 in its conducted Predicted Reliability assessment. The three-year/36-mile basic warranty and a five-year/100,000-mile warranty on power train are also included in the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan package.

The Competition

The Grand Caravan may have a lot of improvements; however, the Toyota Sienna (MSRP $25,060; 19 city / 24 hwy)and Honda Odyssey (MSRP $28,075; 18 city / 27hwy) are still the most preferred for their business class seats. Its price may be a bit higher than the Grand Caravan but nothing comes close to Honda Odyssey’s premium driving performance. The Toyota Sienna is also highly recommended for its convenience features like the adjustable second-row seats.

Pros & cons

A downside of the2011 Grand Caravan are its ordinary exterior design and difficult to utilize seating options. Compared to other minivans in its class and price range, this Dodge vehicle only comes with fewer safety features. On the other hand, the reviewers are impressed with its low step-in height.

To look more posh, the hard plastic interior parts were replaced by softer and more refined materials. It is also commended for its smoother and quieter ride. The Grand Caravan now comes with more graceful cornering with its Michelins tires. And to offer fun travel, the entertainment system is even improved.

Overall Rating

What others say:

“The 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan is a high-functioning box on wheels—with the old penalty-box trim neatly excised, and a new powertrain spliced into place.”Car Connection

“Despite a retuned suspension for 2011, this minivan doesn’t handle much differently than its 2008-2010 counterpart. That’s not a bad thing, however. Despite their overall size, these big vans are quite tractable. Body lean in corners is fairly pronounced, as you might expect. An impressively tight turning radius aids in close-quarters maneuvering.”Consumer Guide

“The Dodge Grand Caravan gets a host of mechanical, styling and interior improvements for 2011, yet still trails the competition in terms of refinement.”Edmunds
