2011 Chrysler 300

The Chrysler 300 is one of the most successful cars that this manufacturer has had in a while. It has the style, the presence, and the uniqueness needed to stand out in the large car market. But the wildly successful 1st generation model of the 300, the one with that iconic “gangster” look, is now giving way to the 2nd generation 300 in 2011. So, is the 2011 Chrysler 300 up to the hype?

Exterior & Interior

Of course, the most obvious change for the 2011 model year is found in its exterior. The wildly successful look that the first model had has been replaced. From being like an old school cruiser, it has now been replaced with a look that is more aggressive and dynamic. Smoother lines and a bolder stance make it look more like those European spec luxury saloons. And while on some eyes it can’t quite match the past generation’s potent looks, this looks uniquely good as well.

The signature silhouette is still there despite the expanded size (despite having an essentially similar wheelbase). While the exterior still needs some work, there is no question that the interior had been improved upon. The resized windows improve visibility from all angles, and the much maligned lack of quality of the interior panels has been addressed. In fact, road noise is even reduced and is now comparable to cars that are much more expensive than this car.

The seats that have always got positive points due to their great space are still there, offering great comfort for occupants both front and rear. As for standard electronic features, there is satellite radio, auxiliary jack for music players, and the uConnect infotainment system are all there, just to name a few. Trunk space is recorded at 16.3 cubic feet, a downgrade from the past model but still at par with its competition.

Performance

The biggest news is the new base engine. The 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 engine is now the new base engine of the 2011 300. Coming in with a maximum output of 292 horsepower, it represents an upgrade of more than 110 horsepower, which is of course always a good thing.

The second option, is a 5.7 liter Hemi V8 engine that has a maximum output of 360 horsepower, is available for the top-of-the line 300C model. For the Chrysler 300C, the drive-train can be selected either as a rear wheel drive or as a four wheel drive model. A five speed automatic transmission comes as standard, with it being replaced by an 8 speed automatic gearbox replacing it by next year.

Though the suspension is tuned more for comfort and cruising, it is surprisingly nimble when the need or want to drive fast is triggered, especially when equipped with the 20 inch wheels. Steering feel is also much better thanks to the Electronic Steering System, but unlike other cars that are equipped with this gizmo, the steering still feels well balanced.

The Competition

The Buick LaCrosse (MSRP $29,690; 19 city / 30 hwy) and Ford Taurus (MSRP $27,755; 18 city / 27 hwy) stand toe to toe against the 300. All three vehicles are closely matched, with the exception of the LaCrosse which only has an inline-4 182 hp engine and accounts for its better miles per gallon. The Taurus and 300 both have V6 engines with more than 200 hp.

Pros & Cons

The new Chrysler 300 has received positive reviews. It received praise for its exterior that somehow managed to retain the soul of the successfully designed past model while integrating new lines and styling cues. The interior, which already boasted great seats, are further improved by increased build quality.

And the new V6 is an obvious step at the right direction. However, most reviewers don’t like its transmission, although this is expected to be remedied by the soon-to-arrive 8 speed transmission.

The 2011 Chrysler 300 is a start of a new era for this successful vehicle. But if early impressions are to be followed, it looks like the tradition is going to continue.

Overall Rating
75 out of 100

What others say:

“No matter how you slice it, these are still large, heavy cars that won’t win any handling contests. Still, the 300 is competent and secure in most every situation. Body lean in fast turns is moderate, but the steering lacks feel. Expect sharper moves with the optional sport suspension, but no models so equipped have been made available for testing.”Consumer Guide

“The new 3.6-liter V6 is much smoother and more powerful than the engine it replaces. The transmission is upgraded from a five-speed automatic to an eight-speed unit this summer, which should contribute to performance and fuel economy.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“Composed and comfortable ride; smooth and powerful engines; well-made and roomy interior; generous features list; available all-wheel-drive system.”Edmunds

“The next-generation 2011 Chrysler 300 is defined by new-but-familiar sheet metal, a totally reinvented interior and a long list of new tech-based features.”KBB

2011 Infiniti FX

One of the top midsized SUVs is the Infiniti FX. This SUV ranks 5 out of 19 tested. This luxury SUV is best for parents who want to drive a sporty, advanced, and fashionable family car. If you love cars packed with modern gadgets, the FX is the right choice. This car is good as a family vehicle but occupants at the rear won’t be that comfortable because it has slightly cramped seats. But interior and exterior design wise, the FX is exceptional.

Performance

The Infiniti FX35 has a V6 3.5 L engine and put outs a maximum power of 303 horsepower. The engine is couple with a seven-speed transmission that is automatic. In just 5.0 seconds, this SUV goes from 0 to 60 mph. Handling is great with the FX because of a suspension that is a double wishbone and a multi-link independent suspension for the rear. Steering is also smooth because it is integrated with a powerful and speed-sensitive steering. Braking is also good because it is responsive.

Exterior

If all the midsize SUVs are lined up together, the Infiniti FX will standout. It has a sleek exterior design integrated with a paint that is self-healing. The paint is not only self-healing but it is also hard to scratch. The adjustable power is dual heated and it has dual exhaust finisher made from chrome. The headlights are bi-functional xenon that is a High Intensity Discharge. An outside mirror that can be folded is also incorporated in the exterior design.

Interior

The interior of the Infiniti FX is filled with luxury features and one-of-a-kind design. The only let down in its interior design is the cargo space and the rear seats. The occupants of the front seats will find it comfortable while other reviewers said that the rear seats are somewhat cramped. FX has a swoopy styling which means there is little space for the head for the occupants of the back seat.

In addition to these interior features, the FX has many optional gadgets you can choose from that you can benefit from. The audio system is a premium Bose system with a 9.3 GB hard drive music box. There is also a navigation system (hard drive) from Infiniti. There is a rear back up monitor and an elegant 6-CD changer.

Safety

As of to date, only the insurance industry performed a crash test for Infiniti FX. For the rear crash test and the front, FX received the top score equal to “Good”. Even if the federal government haven’t performed their test yet but the numerous and advanced systems of safety aids are very comforting. The included features are the advanced system for its air bags, the Brake force distribution that is electronic, the Anti-lock brakes, the control system for the traction, and the Vehicle Dynamic Control. Several high-tech safety systems are integrated like the intelligent assist for the brake associated with a collision warning for the forward motion, seat belts for the pre-crash, and many others.

Reliability

The 2011 Infiniti FX received good ratings. Its overall mechanical rating is 4.5 out of 5 stars. The power-train rating is perfect 5. Other quality ratings of FX received 3 stars and above. This midsize SUV comes with a basic warranty for four years or 60,000 miles, and a six year or 70,000 mile for its power-train warranty.

The Competition

The FX is already heaving with luxury features but the Lexus RX 350 (MSRP $39,720; 20 city / 27 hwy) exceeds what luxurious features FX can offer. Driving and riding Lexus RX 350 is comfortable but its performance won’t surpass that of Infiniti FX. If you want a family SUV that is not that luxurious but practical, you might have a check on Acura MDX (MSRP $42,930; 16 city / 21 hwy). Riding it would be almost as fun as riding FX but its style won’t outdo FX. The spacious cargo area of MDX is a plus for a SUV. Another advantage of having MDX as your family car is it can accommodate all of your family comfortably in the second and third row of the car.

Pros & Cons

With the installed V6 engine in Infiniti FX, great power is generated leading to a fun driving experience. FX is packed with ultra-modern features like its navigation system and the system of the air bags. Its exterior design is sleek and splendid that you don’t want to take your eyes off it.

The only let down of this midsize SUV is it is not practical compared to its class. There are also visibilities issues that you need to think about before buying Infiniti FX. Also, you can sometimes experience harsh drives because of the suspension that is sporty.

Infiniti FX is a good choice if your family size is more than five and you love a sporty and luxurious SUV.

Overall Rating

What others say:

“The 2011 Infiniti FX has a sexy shape and an aggressive road presence, but its collection of details can lead some to assess it as cluttered.”Car Connection

“Most controls are logically placed and intuitive. Multiple safety-system on/off switches are clustered near driver’s left knee and can get confusing to distinguish because acronyms are used on each. Voice-activated climate control, navigation, and audio system didn’t always recognize voice commands.”Consumer Guide

“Well-finished and fairly roomy, the stylish cabin is quiet. Outward visibility suffers from the styling. Cargo capacity is modest.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“With an emphasis on performance, style and technology, the 2011 Infiniti FX is an enticing choice for a luxury SUV. But it comes up short regarding practicality and utility.”Edmunds

“The 2011 Infiniti FX’s cabin can feel a bit cocoon-like, so claustrophobic drivers might prefer something a bit more airy and open.”KBB

The best assets in a Mazda are good interior, comfortable seats, and the best fuel economy among the minivans.

Horsepower: 157 HP Max RPM: 6000 RPM
Torque: 163 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm Transmission: 6-Speed Manual w/ OD

Available Trims & Engine
Option:Mazda 5 Touring MSRP: $21,345; MPG: 21 city / 28 hwy
Option:Mazda 5 Grand Touring MSRP: $24,025; MPG: 21 city / 28 hwy

Performance

Handling the Mazda5 is easy and it gives you an enjoyable driving experience. When you grab hold of the steering wheel, it feels very engaging to drive it. The drive-train of a Mazda5 is comes standard with a 5-speed manual with an option of an automatic five-speed transmission. The downside, the engine is only a four-cylinder 2.5 liter engine that can generate a minimal amount of power which is 157 HP. But even if it has less power, it is the best economy of fuel in its class. The integrated automatic transmission is efficient in making the shift smooth and the downshift quick. The transmission is very responsive. The torque produced by the coupling of the engine and the transmission is 163 ft lb at 4,000 revolutions per minute.

Exterior

The exterior design of the Mazda5 is a standout from all others. What adds to the flamboyant look of the car are the swoopy lines that grace the profile. At first glimpse, you’ll observe side flutes that are unnecessary but if you look at it for a long time, you will appreciate the creativity and its beauty.

Interior

Many people find the Mazda5’s interior to be small but this seems to be not a big issue. Though the interior is not spacious, the design is brilliant. One feature that might catch the attention of the buyer are the two captain chairs in the first two rows. The captain chair offers very comfortable seat for the occupant. Yes, Mazda5 doesn’t offer many interior features but the simplicity and the low price may be the reasons why a buyer must park this minivan in their garage. Also, the interior still looks attractive even if it is constructed sturdily.

Safety

The 2011 Mazda5 hasn’t undergone any crash tests given by the government or the insurance industry but the records of the previous models shows good ratings for safety. For the front-impact test, the 2010 model received 5 stars out of 5. Another 5 stars is given for the side-impact test for the protection of the driver. Only 4 stars are given for the protection of passengers from the side-impact crash. The rating for rollover is four out of five stars. Other safety features included in Mazda5 are the control of traction and stability, airbags on the side and front, and curtain airbags for the side all rows.

Reliability

The 2012 model of the Mazda5 obtained 6 score out of 10 reliability rating given by J.D. Power and Associates. Like all other minivans, Mazda5 also comes with several warranties. One is the bumper to bumper coverage for 3 years/36,000 miles. Another is the power-train coverage for 5-years or 60,000 miles.

The Competition

The Mazda5 minivan is comparable to Kia Sedona (MSRP $24,595; 18 city / 25 hwy). The Sedona has the same space with Mazda5 but it is not very expensive. Kia Sedona won the Best Minivan in 2011. Among other minivans, Sedona is known to offer the longest warranty of power-train.

However, if you want a spacious minivan packed with many interior features, the Honda Odyssey (MSRP $28,225; 18 city / 27 hwy) is the best choice. Having your hand on the steering wheel of Odyssey, you’ll have fun driving even if the whole family is with you. With the options it offers, this full-sized minivan can be compared to a luxury car. All these offered features come with a price higher than the Mazda5.

Pros & Cons

The pros of buying this minivan are; the experience of fun driving, save more cash in the long run because it offers better economy of the fuel, and it comes in a lower price. Of course, there are also cons when you buy this car. First, it lacks cargo area since it is compact and small. Next, the seats on the third row are cramped. Lastly, you are offered with a few options only.

Overall Rating
74 out of 100

What others say:

“Mazda 5 is surprisingly sporty. Grip is good and body lean is modest in corners. The responsive steering provides good road feel, and a tight turning circle aids in close-quarters maneuvering.”Consumer Guide

“Fuel-efficient base engine, but could be slightly underpowered.”Edmunds

“If you need seating for six with easier third-row entry than an SUV and a smaller price tag than a minivan, the Mazda5 can fill your need.”KBB

2011 Scion xB

The 2011 Scion xB received several thumbs up from its users in terms of the cars safety, affordability, and overall looks. This is the reason why it ranks 9 out of 33 budget cars. Other cars with top of the line designs entered the market, the Scion xB was already there, and Scion does not disappoint its fans with the 2011 version.

Performance

In terms of performance, the 2011 Scion xB did not meet standards expected by some. The reason behind it is its deficiency in fuel saving and in power on the road because of its design. The Scion xB has a 2.4 liter in-line four cylinder engine which gives it 158 horsepower performance. It reaches 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. That much fuel usage is a large blow towards its performance.

Interior & Exterior

The interior and exterior design of this car has been given the highest rating. The exterior of the car is small, funky, and beautifully boxy. The company retains the exterior design of its previous version which many people say is a very wise decision for them.

The interior of the xB has many improvements. The car is very roomy and well equipped inside compared to the previous model. The only problem that people see in its interior is that some of the controls seem to be misplaced which makes driving difficult. Despite some bad reviews, the overall design of the car is really a thumbs-up for most of its users.

Safety

As one of its strength, the Scion xB received good reviews on its safety and reliability. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it 4 stars for its front-seat passengers’ protection and a perfect score of 5 stars on its rear and side passengers’ protection.

Moreover, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it its highest rating possible in its frontal and side impact crashes. These facts will bring the insurance for this car at a very affordable rate. Among its safety features are anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control, and airbags.

Pros & Cons

In addition to the great things about the xB, Scion has added a lot of things to offer to its customers. There are varieties of specialized equipments that people who choose the car; they range from the additional sound system, specialized car wheels, and many other cool accessories. The only problem was the timely delivery of the ordered xB. In spite of that, the extras are worth the wait.

The Competition

Compared with some car models alike, 2011 Scion xB stands pretty well. But for those people who want a better price, they might consider choosing the Kia Soul (MSRP $13,300; 26 city / 31 hwy). The price of Soul is less than the Scion xB.

On the other hand, for those people who want a more economical vehicle, you might find the Nissan Cube (MSRP $14,740; 25 city / 30 hwy) interesting. In addition, for people looking for a packed with features despite the price and get great gas mileage, the Honda Fit (MSRP $15,175; 27 city / 33 hwy) might be worth looking at.

The 2011 Scion xB is a great choice for people who want to have a car of beauty and safety.

What others say:

“Whether you see it as a boxy wagon or a new kind of microvan, the high-shouldered 2011 Scion xB is funky, in a good way.”Car Connection

“There is moderate body lean in fast turns, and the steering response is slightly vague. A tight turning radius and light steering feel aid low-speed maneuverability. The brakes are strong and responsive.”Consumer Guide

“The ride is compliant, and handling is responsive. The radio controls are a bit confusing.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“The 2011 Scion xB is a capable compact people mover and cargo hauler that packs lots of high-tech audio features. Fuel economy is lackluster, however, and the unconventional styling isn’t for everyone.”Edmunds

“The 2011 Scion xB is not much bigger than most compact cars and SUVs, yet its versatile interior and miserly fuel economy give it the best attributes of both.”KBB

2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S

The Porsche 911 is a timeless classic that is a trendsetter in more ways than one. For one, it has fundamentally never changed since 1964, and yet it is still one of the best touring cars around.

A true “everyday supercar”, it is a perfect balance of speed, practicality, and innovation. One of the most popular models in the 911 line is the Turbo.

Specifications

General Info
Vehicle Type: Super Sport Coupe Base Price: NA
Fuel Tank Capacity: 17.7 gallons (67 liters) MPG: 17 city / 25 hwy
Dimensions
Length: 176.2 in. (447.5 cm) Width: 72.9 in. (185 cm)
Height: 51.1 in. (128 cm) Wheel Base: 92.5 in. (234.9 cm)
Curb Weight: 3494 lbs (1585 kg) Ground Clearance: NA
Luggage Capacity: 4.7 cu ft Maximum Seating: 4 people
Performance
Engine: 24-valve Twin Turbo DOHC Flat-6 Displacement: 3800 cc
Horsepower: 530 HP Max RPM: 6250 RPM
Torque: 516 lb-ft @ 2100 rpm Transmission: 7-Speed Dual Clutch Automatic
0-60 mph: 2.9 seconds Top Speed: 195 mph (314 km/h)

As the name suggests, it uses a turbocharger to boost engine output ay at least 25 percent. Starting in 1976, the 911 Turbo cars have always been one of the fastest vehicles in the world during their time. And now, 35 years later, the tradition of the Turbo lives with the 2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S, the most powerful 911 Turbo yet.

The 2011 Turbo S is based on the current generation Porsche 911, the 997. And according to the guys from Stuttgart, Germany themselves, this is for the driver that only settles for the best. While it looks like the ordinary Porsche 911 Turbo, this is made to be head and shoulders better to the already competitive Turbo.

Performance

Of course, the star of the show is the same 6 cylinder boxer engine that powered the 911. Also, befitting its name, it is equipped with a turbocharger that significantly boosts experience. But it doesn’t stop there. There are 2 turbochargers found in this car, each equipped with variable turbine geometry. This increases the already impressive numbers of the 911 Turbo into 530 horsepower (a 30hp increase from the Turbo) and 516 lb/ft of torque. But the incredible thing is, despite its ferocious output, it is the most fuel efficient car in its class, knocking in an estimated 25 miles per gallon, which is super impressive given its performance credentials. And performance credentials are something that this car has a lot of.

So, here are some of those performance credentials. Zero to 100 kilometers per hour comes in 3.3 seconds, zero to 200 kilometers per hour comes in 10.8 seconds, and top speed is rated at over 300 kilometers an hour. Those are numbers that are well within supercar territory. Even more amazing about the 911 Turbo S is that it is equipped standard with the features that are optional even for the 911 Turbo. Some of the equipment includes the critically acclaimed Porsche PDK 7 speed dual clutch gearbox, a specialized 4 wheel drive system with torque vectoring, and ceramic composite brakes.

Exterior & Interior

Even though it is a punishing, no compromise sports car, it doesn’t lack the flair and elegance that Porsche traditionally has. Dynamic bending lights, adaptive seats, a premium entertainment system, and a custom two tone leather upholstery schemes makes sure that the driver feels at home while using this vehicle.

The Porsche 911 Turbo S is a unique car. It is every bit worth the price. As one of the most exclusive Porsche 911s ever built, it is a top tier model in every sense of the word.
