“The steering is accurate with good road feel and just enough power assist. Handling is reasonably car-like for an off-road-flavored SUV. Body lean is well controlled, though you have to slow down quite a bit before a fast turn. ”Consumer Guide

“Chrysler has done a first-rate job with the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, retaining the Jeepness while adding a new level of refinement and luxury. The exterior design is distinctively Jeep yet modern and fresh. Inside, the Grand Cherokee Laredo is beautifully done, with a clean design, nice-quality materials and rich colors.”MSN Auto

“Added refinement and still-substantial off-road capability make the fully redesigned 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee a competitive choice for a midsize crossover.”Edmunds

2011 Chevrolet Colorado

For a long time, pickup trucks, both big and small, have been known as the cup of tea for American car dealers. But with the continuing onslaught of brands from other countries offering their own iterations of the pickup, this perception is being challenged. Compact pickups are popular because of their smaller size, their daily driving capability, and their light duty performance. In this ever changing segment, Chevrolet is bringing in the Colorado to carry the fight for them.

Exterior & Interior

The 2011 Chevrolet Colorado, at first glance, is your typical Chevy. Although the looks of this present generation of the Colorado is gaining in age (the front end is in fact based on the 2004 Silverado), people still like it. There are 3 trims available for the Colorado, a regular cab, an extended cab, and a crew cab. And with an adjustable tailgate, it brings its usefulness to another level. As for the interior, it has the Spartan feel of old school trucks, which is actually can be a good or bad thing depending on the owner.

The gauges are simple to read, the controls are simple, but some find that the interior feels too cheap. As for seating, it can range from 2 to 5, depending on the type of cab that you would purchase. However, most have noted that the front seats are markedly better compared to the rear seats. For the base model, there are no electric windows and the only standard equipment is an AM/FM radio, but as the trim level increases, so are the features. The cab space is good enough, but interior luggage space is largely dependent on what type of model you would get. However, for those that would get the extended cab or the crew cab, the rear seats are foldable to get more room.

Performance

There are 3 types of engine available for the 2011 Colorado. There’s a 2.9 liter 4 cylinder engine that produces 185 horsepower, a 3.7 liter 5 cylinder engine that produces 242 horsepower, and a V8 engine that produces 300 horsepower. The transmission options are a 5 speed manual transmission that is equipped on the 4 cylinder variants, and a 4 speed automatic that is equipped on the 5 cylinder and V8 engine variants.

The performance is relatively smooth and adequate for all engines, though opinion is largely divided regarding the V8 option. The stock suspension, while not exactly the best when it comes to refinement, is actually competent enough that it can be driven in just about any road surface. However, with the optional ZQ8 suspension, the qualities of this car are greatly increased. As for hauling capacity, it is largely dependent on the type of engine it is equipped with, with the most capable being the V8, with a maximum towing capacity rated at 6000 pounds.

The Competition

There are two other vehicles that match up closely to the Colorado, the Ford Ranger (MSRP $18,160; 22 city / 27 hwy) and the Nissan Frontier (MSRP $17,540; 19 city / 23 hwy). All these trucks serve diverse roles in which an owner can specially tailor for what he/she needs.

Pros & Cons

There are varying opinions about the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado. There are a lot of positives though. Among them is the dated yet still attractive exterior. The very basic interior is very intuitive to use and easy to read. Its performance is just about good enough for all engine types, and the choice of transmission is just about right. Opinions are divided with regards to its minimalist interior, with some saying that it is generally uncomfortable. In addition, fuel economy is deemed to be relatively poor for all engine types.

And while the V8 engine adds a lot to its performance, a lot of people question why it is in there, given that people buy compact trucks for economy, and if looking for performance, the Silverado seems to be a much better option, even if it is priced a bit higher.

What others say:

“It’s not an unattractive truck, it simply lacks the serious presence you’d get from a true full-sizer. Inside, though, the Colorado is a letdown. ”Car Connection

“All models corner with reasonable poise, though some testers find these trucks slow to react to steering inputs. Good straight-line stability.”Consumer Guide

“Handling is sound but unexceptional. The ride is unsettled, and the body constantly quivers. ESC is standard.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“Mediocre interior fit and finish quality; aging design; lackluster power and towing capacity with base engines.”Edmunds

“If you like the rugged, bold look of the full-size Silverado, but want it in a smaller package that gets better fuel economy, check out the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado.”KBB

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera

The new Porsche 911 is scheduled to be released in 2012. This 48 year old car, fundamentally unchanged since being first released, is now entering a new stage in its storied history. If this car would be up to the hype is a completely different story. But looking at its specs, the 2012 911 Carrera has everything needed to carry the 911 name proudly.

Exterior

The shape is still the same old 911. But for 2012, it features some changes. For instance, despite a reduced overall height, the wheelbase is increased by almost 4 inches. A visual impression of width, from the traditional wide arched fenders to the new side mirrors, is created quite spectacularly. But the modifications on the exterior is more than just skin deep. The body panels are composed of an aluminum steel composite that allows a reduction of weight by about 100 pounds compared to last year’s model. In addition, it is aerodynamically constructed, with an overall drag coefficient of 0.29.

Performance

A new 3.6 liter engine raises new standards. With an output improved to 345 horsepower and an improved fuel efficiency rating, it is a huge leap forward for the 911 on both categories. And of course, the trademark 911 handling, partly aided by the increased wheelbase and wider front track, is as strong as ever.

The 2012 Porsche 911 has debuted in the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show last September. And it is safe to say that the world has glimpsed the future of the legendary 911. And truth be told, it is still as good as ever.

2011 Buick Regal

The 2011 Buick Regal is a midsize sedan often compared to the La Crosse because of its size and its appeal. The old Buick Regal models have been popular for a time but this time, the 2011 version looks more athletic. It has been modernized and refined thoroughly which is why among the entry level luxury cars, it is considered as one of the best sedans. It rides on a wheelbase of 107.8 inches that is shorter by 4 inches than the LaCrosse.

New Features

The 2011 Regal comes in two trim levels, the CXL and CXL Turbo. It offers standard features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, heated side view mirrors, fog lamps, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, full power accessories, leather upholstery, OnStar, power driver seat, auto dimming rearview mirror, heated front seats, tilt/telescoping steering column, 60/40 split rear seatback, trip computer, audio system with seven speakers and Bluetooth connectivity.

The CXL Turbo also has additional features such as a 12-way power adjustable passenger seat in the front and rear parking sensors. These features are optional in the CXL trim. Other optional features of the Regal CXL Turbo are xenon headlights, 19-inch wheels and drive control system. Sunroof is also optional on the 2011 Regal.

Performance

The Buick Regal has two engines to choose from. One is the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that achieves 182 horsepower and 172 pound feet of torque. The other engine is the 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine that achieves 220 horsepower and 258 pound feet of torque. Both engines are in standard six-speed automatic transmission but the CXL Turbo also comes with a six-speed manual transmission.

Fuel economy is estimated to reach 19 mpg in the city and 30 mpg in the highway. The Turbo trim can reach 18 mpg in the city and 28 mpg in the highway.

Handling gives a comfortable ride. But the body roll, hefty curb weight and vague steering puts limits to the vehicle’s performance.

Exterior & Interior

The 2011 version of the Regal has sharp and sophisticated styling. Reviewers say that its appearance is striking and would appeal to buyers that are fashionably conscious. Its horizontal lines which are defined further by a chrome perimeter can be very striking. The bulging fenders, short overhangs and steeply raked roofline can easily get somebody’s attention. The back is highly sculpted with the scrolling lines that are created by a shapely trunk lid.

The Regal can seat up to five people and gives a comfortable ride with its seating configuration. The front seats are supported for good driving and are comfortable during long trips. The rear seat on the other hand is tight and uncomfortable. The trunk measures 14.2 cubic feet but is narrow that it can hardly accommodate golf bags. Interior also features a 12-way power driver’s seat, easily controlled climate controls and an audio and navigation system.

Safety & Reliability

The 2011 Regal offers a standard four-wheel antilock disc brake that comes with brake assist, front wheel drive, traction control and six air bags with side-impact airbags for front and side curtains for front and side. It also comes with a communication system and six month free OnStar and then eventually the owner have to subscribe for the service.

The IHHS named the 2011 Regal a Top Safety Pick earning the score of “Good” in the front-side impact. “Good” in rear and roof strength and standard electronic ability system.

The Competition

The Regal is closely compared to the Hyundai Sonata (MSRP $19,695; 24 city / 35 hwy) for being a midsize affordable sedan. Regal is more expensive than the Sonata which also has better fuel economy. Other cars to consider are Acura TSX (MSRP $29,810; 22 city / 31 hwy), Audi A4 (MSRP $32,500; 21 city / 30 hwy) and the Lexus ES (MSRP $36,725; 19 city / 28 hwy) but these car models are more expensive than the Regal that is why it still remains as the best option in choosing midsize sedan vehicle.

Pros:

  • Sporty handling
  • Well-balanced performance
  • Interior is inviting
  • High fuel economy
  • Lots of standard features
  • Upscale cabin

Cons:

  • Narrow trunk
  • Electronic interface is confusing
  • Unpleasing base engine

Overall Rating

What others say:

“There’s not much old Buick in the Regal, and that’s a good thing; its dynamic styling resets the “wow” factor for premium family sedans.”Car Connection

“Nimble and balanced in quick changes of direction. The steering is direct but smooth, with good feedback. The brakes provide good stopping control. Interactive Drive Control System’s Sport mode delivers sharper moves.”Consumer Guide

“Handling is agile and the car steers well. The ride is supple and controlled and wind noise is well suppressed.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports /

“The 2011 Buick Regal proves the old “what’s in a name” adage; the tri-shield division has produced a car worthy of consideration by those who truly enjoy driving.”Edmunds

2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Owning an SUV is a utilitarian adventure. It has become a fashion statement, an image of luxury and dominance. However, with space getting harder to come by, along with rising oil prices and safety issues, SUVs that are smaller and more compact in size are now becoming more commonplace. With that said, it is one of the most competitive automotive divisions around. Chevrolet, one of the most popular brands in America, has a weapon for this market.

Exterior & Interior

The Equinox is considered a compact SUV, but it looks considerably bigger than most of its competition. As for its styling, some people might think that it is bland. But in reality, the simplicity of the design actually works in its favor. People likes that it has its own identity style wise, both compared to the competition and compared to other cars in the Chevy stable. The positives doesn’t stop there, however, as when you go inside this car, you can find more things to like. As for the seats, it can give comfortable seating for 5 people that are good even for long distance travels.

As for trimming, it is generally considered to be great despite the presence of some cheap looking materials. And for standard equipment, how about satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack, and cruise control. Optional equipment includes a rearview camera, a navigation system, a comprehensive entertainment system, and heated front seats. The trunk space is just about sufficient, with 63.7 cubic feet of space on the rear. As for safety equipment, there is a host of airbags, anti lock brakes, traction control, stability control, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Performance

There are 2 engines available for the Equinox. The base engine is a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine that produces a maximum of 182 horsepower. A 3.0 liter V6 engine that produces 264 horsepower is optional equipment for those that want more punch. Two wheel drive is standard, while a 4 wheel drive system is optional. Even though both engines sound powerful enough, it has lower output than some of its competitors.

However, it still brings adequate performance. But for its lack of power, it has strong fuel efficiency numbers that is arguably the best in its class. Miles per gallon performance for the 4 cylinder ranges from 22 to 32, and 17 to 24 miles per gallon is the typical range for the V6. In addition, the handling of this car is top notch. It can absorb contact from the road with ease, ensuring ride smoothness. It has disc brakes for all 4 wheels that ensure good stopping power. Steering feel is excellent with power steering, and its cornering characteristics are deemed to be effective.

Pros & Cons

The Chevrolet Equinox is one of the most critically acclaimed compact SUVs on the market today. First up, it integrates a ton of good things given its affordable price tag. The styling, though not exactly spectacular, is simple, clean, and distinctive. And when you come inside, the interior is a great place to be.

The seats are very comfortable and room is very adequate, which is great news for riders that tend to go on long distance trips. Also, the fuel economy, especially for the 4 cylinder, is excellent. And its suspension is well sorted out. And as for weaknesses, people could get disappointed with its lack of a third row seat, and there is a considerable drop on the fuel economy for the V6 engine.

All in all, the compact size of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox belies the quality in which it is constructed. It is one of the best compact SUVs in the world, and this is something that is going to give you serious value.

What others say:

“The Equinox hits the mark in many ways with respect to practicality and comfort, and only lets down on a few cost-cut material details.”Car Connection

“Equinox 4-cylinder models have electric power steering that’s designed to increase fuel economy, but it lacks road feel. The V6’s hydraulic power steering doesn’t feel much better. A surprisingly large turning radius can complicate close-quarters maneuvering. Braking is smooth and progressive.”Consumer Guide

“The Equinox has a taut yet supple and controlled ride, with responsive and secure handling.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“Not quite as much cargo space as chief rivals; some controls difficult to reach; numb and uncommunicative steering.”Edmunds

“If you prefer bold styling over bland, cutting edge audio and navigation over gutless four speaker systems, and class-leading 32-mpg highway fuel economy, Chevrolet has built a crossover utility vehicle for you.”KBB
