2013 Lexus GS 450h

Lexus unveiled the GS 450h hybrid luxury sedan at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show. Toyota has made several attempts to apply the hybrid technology to various models but the results have been quite mixed.

The 2013 GS 450h is a major improvement over the outgoing model which was quite powerful but didn’t succeed in achieving the level of fuel efficiency that one would come to expect from a hybrid car. The 2013 GS 450h boasts of 35% improvement in fuel efficiency as compared to the outgoing model.

Stylish Design

The GS 450h imbibes the new Lexus design language with its precisely sculpted exterior. The engineers designed the GS to maximize the aerodynamics. The car gets a new platform which is much more rigid compared to the previous model. The car also gets a new suspension system which allows much more precision while cornering.

Performance

The Lexus GS 450h gets an entirely new V6 engine and an improved hybrid system. The car is powered by a 3.5 liter V6 engine which has been redesigned to run on Atkinson cycle which has resulted in the improvement in fuel efficiency of the vehicle.

It includes a two motor hybrid system and the combined output of the hybrid system is 338hp, which is higher than the non-hybrid V6 version producing 303hp. For greater efficiency, the maximum voltages for the hybrid is limited to 500 volts in the Eco mode while in sports mode its goes up to 650 volts.

The GS 450 h also has a sports plus mode which stiffens up the suspension and offers greater throttle response.

Efficiency

The increased efficiency in the 2013 GS 450h comes at a minor loss of performance with the car doing 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 second against the 5.2 seconds of old model.

The fuel efficiency has gone up to 31mpg combined (29 city/ 34 highway), which is 8 mpg more than 2011 model.

With new GS 450h, Toyota does manage to get its hybrid power-efficiency combination right. It’s a major improvement over the 2011 model which failed miserably at the market place. With a better overall product, it would be interesting to see what kind of sales numbers Toyota achieves with the new Lexus GS 450h .

2013 Cadillac ATS

Cadillac launched its 2013 Cadillac ATS at the Detroit Auto Show which would be GM’s contender in the compact luxury sedan segment currently ruled by BMW and Audi.

This segment is the biggest luxury car segment in the world and GM is betting big on the ATS to make its mark here.

Stylish Design

The Cadillac ATS is being rolled out on an all-new platform with rear-wheel-drive. Cadillac is quite proud of the car’s design. In the ATS, Cadillac’s Art and Science design language has been borrowed from the larger CTS sedan with flat surfaces and angular lines seen across the body.

The design is not just aesthetically pleasing but has ensured that the new ATS is significantly lighter than the competition. In fact, keeping the car light was one of the core design objectives for the vehicle and every component was considered for alternate lighter options without compromising on functionality.

Lightweight

The car uses door trim panels of natural fiber, aluminum hood and engine mount blocks of magnesium to ensure low overall weight of the vehicle. The car is 100 pounds lighter than the Audi A4 despite having much more powerful engine under the hood. High power to weight ratio makes this car quite nimble on its feet and promises to be a pleasure for enthusiasts.

Performance

The Cadillac ATS is available in 3 engine options. At the lower end, 2.5 liter 4-cylinder in line would produce 200 hp which should return a good fuel economy at 30mpg on highway. The most interesting options would be 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine which will churn out 270 hp and the 3.6 liter V6 with an output of 318 hp.

The first impressions of ATS suggest that it would be a great performance car with high power to weight ratio. The car is expected to be quick and nimble and should be fun to drive. While looks are subject to individual preference, the biggest selling point for ATS is surely going to be its performance and its lightweight design.

1969 Holden Hurricane Concept Restored

This was one car that was not ever produced. Ever since being designed and built by Holden back in 1969, it was relegated primarily to backwater locations, languishing in dirty and unkempt garages until someone thought of trying to find this car and try to restore it.

Ahead of its Time

The Hurricane Concept car is truly one of kind and special car. Not only did it have the engine at the back of the driver, thereby making it a mid engine car, it also was the very first car to have a digital read out of its instruments. Not only that, the Hurricane was even the very first car to have a sort of navigational driver aid and a rear view camera.

This is something that we now take for granted but in the 1970s, they had no technology that can effectively do what we use now, that is satellites for GPS navigation. Instead, it relied on a system of embedded magnets on the road to be able to read where the car is going and give instructions on where to guide the driver.

Performance

Even the design of the car seems to be reminiscent of today’s high performance mid engine cars. The engine is a 4.2 liter V8 that produces 262 hp, which in 1969 was already quite a handful.

Other things that were duly noted on the car was an automatic air-conditioning that maintained the temperature inside the cabin and the use of what was a then none existent inertia reel seatbelt, also something that we take for granted nowadays.

2011 Nissan Juke-R Concept

Since it’s unveiling, the 2011 Nissan Juke-R has been handed the title ‘World’s fastest crossover’.

The Juke-R concept car is unique in the sense that it has successfully combined the speed, power, handling and performance of Nissan’s GT-R flagship sports car model with the bold and exciting Juke crossover.

Performance

The Nissan Juke-R is truly deserving of the ‘fastest crossover’ title due to its ability to accelerate from 0-100kmph (62mph) in 3.7 seconds and continue upwards to the top speed of 257 kph. The impressive 3.8 liter twin turbo V6 engine is what makes this feat possible.

What is perhaps more impressive is that the Nissan Juke-R handles just like a supercar – the drive-train and suspension from the GT-R model have been successfully integrated into the Juke-R body. Despite the capability of high speeds in the new Juke-R, the weight remains lower and the top speed remains higher in the GT-R.

The weight in the Juke-R has been increased since the Juke body has had to have extra chassis reinforcement to be able to successfully integrate Nissan supercar components; however, the Nissan Juke-R is still the fastest crossover available.

The unique styling of the Juke-R crossover is also worthy of commendation, the bold styling, flared wheel arches, matte black finish and aggressive lines and curves certainly makes the Juke-R a powerful and menacing force on the road – both in terms of performance and design.

Interior & Exterior

The Juke-R interior is just as impressive, the console is motorcycle-inspired and is placed in the center of the modified cabin that has been fully fitted with race seats, race harness and roll cage that all meet race-specifications. GT-R components such as the steering wheel, dials, touch screen display and pedals have all been built into a modified Juke dashboard.

Despite all the modifications to the components of the Juke, the physical dimensions of the Juke remain similar to the original Juke model. The vehicle is the same height and length and it also features the same wheelbase dimensions: only the width of the car has increased.
