2012 Honda CR-V

The 2012 Honda CR-V is seen as the car that will bring glory back to the beloved Japanese car company. We remember that the 2011 CR-V was panned by a number of media outlets because they deem that Korean and American offerings are better as far as crossovers are concerned.

But with the new CR V, it looks like Honda will again get a hold of success. They might do it by combining incremental innovative changes with the classic formula.

Engine & Performance

Not much has changed about the engine of the new Honda CR-V. It is still capable of bringing the power that you need on the road with its slightly updated 4 cylinder 2.4 liter engine. It can bring 185 horsepower and 163 lbs/ft of torque.

The brakes work well during a high-speed panic braking test and the 5 speed automatic transmission is smooth and transparent. Driving the new CR-V brings a comfortable and quiet experience.

The updated rear differentials of the all-wheel drive models provide additional torque on wet surfaces. It can significantly reduce wheel spin and the new power is actually obvious even on dry surfaces.

Honda also put enough thought on fuel efficiency as the new CR-V consumes approximately 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg in highways. That statistics is for the AWD models. Increase the numbers by one and you get the approximate measurements for the front wheel drive models.

Another thing that is worthy of your attention is the ECON mode. By the push of a button, irregular throttle inputs are eliminated and thus fuel economy is improved.

Exterior

There is actually not much to say about the overall looks of the new Honda CR V. It basically looks the same as its forerunner, with a few revisions on the front to represent the company’s new corporate face. You cannot actually tell the difference between the 2011 and the 2012 CR V if you do not pay close attention.

Interior

The minimal changes in the exterior made the alterations in the interior more noticeable. You can find familiar Honda parts with a new look as well as the thick rimmed steering wheel. The gauge cluster has been subdued more but not to the extent of making it difficult for the driver to see.

The seats are covered with leather. The center stack is dominated by a navigation system unit. Although the navigation system looks a little old, it is intuitive and is very easy to use. Some car owners who use new navigation systems tag the CR-V’s “outdated and confusing.”

It is interesting to note that there are times when small things make great difference and this time it happens with the new CR-V. The navigation system has a three mode camera that provides a wide angle view, a standard view, and a view where you can see downward in a 90 degree angle to look out for protruding objects such as barriers and poles. Another thing worthy of your notice is the roomier compartment.

On top of this, you can simply pull a single lever to entirely fold the back seats. That lets you put more stuff into the car, from your usual groceries to furniture. This engineering is indeed impressive enough that you could buy a unit simply because of it.

Safety

As for safety, the Honda CR-V is a top pick of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and scores well in the criteria set by the National Traffic Safety Administration.

Pros

Honda takes pride in the fuel efficient engine of the CR-V as well as the family friendliness that it brings. So if you are more after fuel efficiency, comfort and safety for your family with a bit of classy styling, there is no reason not to consider the new Honda CR-V.

Cons

One thing that consumers always complain about is the Honda CR V’s gearing which makes it slow. In fact, it is believed to be the slowest in its class. However, that does not deter car owners from buying the CR-V for a certain philosophy: you do not get entertainment just from how your car accelerates.

If you want a crossover that has adequate room, better gas mileage, family friendly and well priced. The 2012 Honda CR-V is right for you.

Competition

In one of the ever-growing segments in the SUV market, the CR-V has been compared to the Toyota RAV4 (MSRP $22,650; 22 city / 28 hwy), the Subaru Forester (MSRP $26,595; 21 city / 27 hwy), and the 2013 Ford Escape (MSRP $25,070; 22 city / 30 hwy).

What others say:

“The 2012 Honda CR-V is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles its size, but its tall gear ratios mean that it’s not reproducible everywhere.”Car Connection

“CR-V is compact-car maneuverable and reasonably fun to drive. Body lean in fast turns is kept in check. The steering is nicely weighted, communicative, and accurate. The brakes provide very good stopping control.”Consumer Guide

“A redesigned CR-V is on sale, but it’s not a radical departure from the current CR-V. It is a little roomier, said to get better fuel economy and be slightly quieter. The carryover four-cylinder engine sees slight output increase with 185 horsepower. ”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“The Honda CR-V has long been one of our favorite compact crossover SUVs, and a redesign for 2012 makes it even more appealing.”Edmunds

“While a bounty of changes inside and out endow the 2012 Honda CR-V with a new level of user-friendly appeal, this latest incarnation retains its signature car-like driving feel and superb flexibility while delivering even better fuel economy.”KBB

2012 Honda Crosstour

The Honda Accord has been one of the most successful cars ever manufactured by this Japanese multinational car maker.

First introduced in 1976, the Accord has been hugely popular in various markets around the world. The first Honda Accord Crosstour was announced in 2009 as a 2010 model.

The 2012 Honda Crosstour is a “crossover utility vehicle” (CUV). It incorporates the comfort of a sedan and the versatility of a powerful SUV. Based on the platform of the original Honda Accord, the Crosstour is ideal for families who want utility and comfort at the same time. It features a raised suspension and unique styling which is sure to attract a lot of fans.

Option:Crosstour EX V6 MSRP: $30,440; MPG: 18 city / 27 hwy

Option:Crosstour EX-L V6 4WD MSRP: $34,540; MPG: 18 city / 26 hwy

Performance

The Honda Crosstour comes in 5 trims. All 5 trims are powered by the same 3.5 liter V6 engine. The maximum power of 271 horsepower is produced at 6200 rpm. The four door vehicle has a passenger capacity of 5. As far as fuel economy is concerned, the Crosstour delivers 23 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on highways. Electronic fuel injection is the fuel system used in the vehicle. All models of the Crosstour are provided with a 5 speed automatic transmission.

Apart from the top model which comes with an all-wheel drive option, all other models have front wheel drive. Being a crossover, the Crosstour is heavier than the sedan version. Hence, the 271 horsepower output of this vehicle can feel a bit on the lower side for a lot of people.

Compared to the Venza and the Outback, the Crossover’s acceleration is on the slower side. Fuel economy is also lacking as the Venza is much more economical. Crisp transmission shifts and smooth acceleration are the hallmarks of this vehicle.

Interior

The interior of the Crosstour has received mixed reactions. A lot of people are of the opinion that Honda should have improved the interiors given its price tag. Nonetheless, the cabin is comfortable with adequate legroom and headroom.

The overall ambience is quiet, which is ideal for families. A six disc CD player, remote entry, power front seats, power moon roof and automatic dual zone climate control are base features on the 2012 Crosstour. The gauges are large and clearly marked.

Logically placed controls are another advantage of this vehicle. While the Crosstour succeeds in providing a sedan like feel to the cabin, it loses out on cargo space. Both the Outback and Venza have more cargo space than this vehicle.

With the Crosstour, Honda has placed more importance on second row space than front seats. As such, the passenger space in the Crosstour is more than that in other competing vehicles of the same class.

Safety

Electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, anti-lock brakes, traction control and side curtain airbags are standard safety features in the Crosstour. There is an optional rearview camera as well. Poor over the shoulder and rear visibility are some drawbacks of this vehicle.

The Honda Crosstour received a score of Good in rear, side impact and front crash tests. However, the poor roof strength of this vehicle is a cause for concern. Despite the huge rear windows, backing up is very difficult due to poor visibility.

The Crosstour is not a bad vehicle by any stretch of the imagination. It delivers solid performance for a CUV and has decent fuel economy. Price is one area where the Crosstour loses out to its competitors. Both the Toyota Venza and Subaru Outback are cheaper. The Toyota Venza (MSRP $29,985; 21 city / 27 hwy) and Subaru Outback (MSRP $26,525; 19 city / 27 hwy) are competitors of this CUV.

Reliability

Additionally, most features of the Crosstour are found on both vehicles. Based on the Camry Sedan, the Toyota Venza is similar to the Crosstour in a lot of ways. Reliability is one area where the Crosstour scores some points.

It comes with a basic warranty of three years or 36,000 miles and power train warranty of 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. When it comes to brand retention and customer satisfaction, few automobile manufacturers can compete with Honda. Despite the overall average score of the 2012 Honda Crosstour, a lot of Honda loyalists might consider this vehicle.

What others say:

“The Honda Crosstour–formerly known as the Accord Crosstour–is a hatchback wagon variant of the popular mid-size four-door sedan.”Car Connection

“While Accord sedans and coupes are on the sporty side of the midsize class, nothing about the Crosstour is especially engaging. This is a competent, somewhat large car, with acceptable road manners.”Consumer Guide

“The Crosstour is derived from the Accord and is a raised hatchback with optional all-wheel drive. We like the high seating position; wide, spacious cabin; and comfortable seats, as well as the smooth, responsive 3.5-liter V6 engine. ”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“Roomy seating; carlike driving dynamics; quiet cabin; available all-wheel drive. Limited cargo capacity; significant blind spots; button-heavy controls; controversial styling.”Edmunds

“Honda calls its 2012 Crosstour a CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle), but we’re not so sure. The 2012 Honda Crosstour is part wagon, part sedan, part CUV and 100-percent different.”KBB

2012 ASMA Porsche Cayenne Turbo The Giant

The 2012 ASMA Porsche Cayenne Turbo “The Giant” body kit, by Erturul ASMA, is the latest offering to come out of the controversial tuning house in Germany, ASMA design.

Erturul ASMA is naturally claiming this design is perfection, but with no power upgrades made available with this Porsche Cayenne body kit, what makes the kit stand out?

Exterior Makeover

The visual impact of the Turbo ‘The Giant’ body kit is something that you really can’t miss – the wide body kit increases the Porsche Cayenne’s width to over 2 meters wide! Nicknamed ‘The Giant’ for obvious reasons, this body kit would definitely get you noticed when you’re on the road.

The body kit that makes up this Porsche Cayenne Turbo comes from genuine carbon fiber and does more than just increase the width of the Cayenne. It also redesigns the rear, adds a modified front bumper that comes with LED daytime lights, includes a new hood, wheel arch extensions, side skirts, tailgates, and low front/rear spoilers.

The rear bumper has been changed so that it now features two center fitted tailpipes and the front end has also been modified so that it contains a larger, more aggressive looking grill/air intake vents.

Also worthy of note are the added 22 inch black alloy wheels, which some say are the only worthy part of the body kit. Since the ASMA Porsche Cayenne Turbo kit has done nothing to the power output/performance aspect of the vehicle, we’re left to decide whether the extremely wide, aerodynamic, body kit by itself is enough to impress.

Performance

The Porsche Cayenne is capable of 550HP with no modifications made by ASMA design, and the aggressively styled, sharp and wide, body kit certainly makes the Porsche Cayenne a formidable looking force on the road.

In the new age of customization, ASMA design has certainly produced something that looks impressive, despite the fact that they failed to make any upgrades to performance. But let’s be honest, does the Porsche Cayenne really need it?

2012 Ford Expedition

The 2012 Ford Expedition combines the toughness of an SUV and the versatility of a wagon, making it ideal for families that want more space, more cargo and more muscle.

Engine

The 2012 Expedition sports a 5.4 liter V8 engine that delivers 310 horsepower and 365 lbs/ft of torque, enough to let you tow a weight of up to 9,200 lbs; thanks to the heavy-duty trailer towing equipment that comes as an optional package. The 6-speed automatic transmission comes standard with the new Expedition.

Option:King Ranch MSRP: $46,780; MPG: 14 city / 20 hwy
Option:King Ranch EL MSRP: $49,430; MPG: 14 city / 20 hwy

Performance

It is common for big vehicles to consume more fuel. The new Expedition has a fuel economy rating of 20 highway and 14 city mpg for its rear-wheel drive model and 18/13 mpg highway/city for the all-wheel drive model.

In the SUV arena, the statistics are definitely not the best. Many drivers praise the quick shifting transmission and most of them like the caliber of the engine. However, there are reports that the Tahoe from Chevrolet feels more powerful.

Interior

It is expected from a sport utility vehicle to have a spacious cabin and a versatile cargo space. Evidently, Ford’s flagship SUV succeeded in providing these important features to customers. Some things that do not seem to keep up with our modern needs is the inferior navigation system, a button studded dash and the use of plastics which is not uncommon in its class.

After all, using state of the art materials and technology for these features will certainly add to the vehicle’s selling price.

The XLT model has cooled and heated front seats which we find very comfortable. This variant also has a cooled and heated second row seat and a very comfortable third row seat. In its class, we can say that these seats are better. Furthermore, the front seats have ample rearward travel to accommodate passengers as short as 4’11” or as tall as 6’4″.

Exterior

The new Expedition is available in 4 trim levels which are the King Ranch Edition, the Limited, the XLT and the base XL. All Expeditions can seat up to eight persons except the standard size XL which begins with five.

Overall, the new Expedition looks boxy but that does not mean that it is ugly. The looks only compliment the muscle that the SUV provides. It can be intentional on Ford’s side; they maybe deviating from the smooth flowing curves, which is the trend in modern crossovers.

Safety

This years Expedition does well in crash tests conducted by the federal government. It scored 5 stars in side crash tests and 4 stars in front crash tests. The new Expedition is equipped with front air bags (dual stage), Ford’s MyKey system, brake assist features and anti-lock brakes.

MyKey can be used to configure the Expedition’s driving parameters, such as the speed or speaker volume, depending on who is behind the wheel.

Reliability

The Expedition comes with a 3-year/36000 miles bumper to bumper warranty, a 5-year safety system and powertrain warranty, and a 5-year perforation and corrosion warranty.

Pros

What we like about the Expedition is its great handling and superior comfort. In addition, it has the foldable rear seats that add up to cargo space. The rear seats are roomy and perhaps one of the bests in its class.

Cons

Plastics were used for the interior and the controls seem dated and cluttered.

Competition

The GMC Yukon (MSRP $45,570; 15 city / 21 hwy) and the Chevrolet Tahoe (MSRP $43,905; 15 city / 21 hwy) are perhaps the closest competitor to the Expedition. Curiously, all are American made SUVs.

With all the positive qualities of the 2012 Ford Expedition, we can conclude that it is a good choice for bigger families who need power, versatility and optimum comfort.

Overall Rating
71 out of 100

What others say:

“It outperforms expectations with steering and ride quality, and with overall road manners that belie its body-on-frame heft. But ultimately, the Expedition loses ground to some other big SUVs because its V-8 engine isn’t as powerful.”Car Connection

“Expedition and Navigator display impressive agility for large SUVs. Nicely weighted steering has a natural feel. There’s relatively little lean in corners for such large trucks. Except in close-quarters maneuvering, extended-length versions give up little to the shorter regular-length models.”Consumer Guide

“The noisy V8 produces 310 hp and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Our tested EL felt sluggish and returned 13 mpg overall. Towing capacity is generous.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“Respectable handling and road comfort; roomy third-row seat; easy-to-fold rear seats increase interior flexibility. V8 engine struggles under heavy loads; dated and cluttered controls; interior cheapened by some low-quality plastics.”Edwards

“If you and your family have needs as big as the 2012 Expedition itself (such as the need to fit eight people or tow up to 9,300 pounds), Ford’s full-size family hauler makes a great addition to any garage. With so many well-thought-out features, the 2012 Ford Expedition is easily the best Expedition to date.”KBB

2012 Honda Accord

The sleek 2012 Honda Accord is the latest in the line of this iconic midsize car. However, some believe that while this latest version is an excellent vehicle, it’s slipped a bit when compared to the 2011 Accord.

It has been noted that the Hyundai Sonata and the Kia Optima (MSRP $19,500; 24 city / 35 hwy) have more horsepower and have better fuel economies.

But reviewers still adore the Accord’s roomy and comfortable insides, its mighty V6 engine and its spacious trunk. The problem seems to be that the Accord has been around for so long and has been good for so long that it’s simply not as sexy as it used to be. Still, the Accord remains a great family car.

Option:Accord EX V6 MSRP: $27,380; MPG: 20 city / 30 hwy
Option:Accord EX-L V6 MSRP: $29,730; MPG: 20 city / 30 hwy

Engine

The 2012 Accord sedan offers two types of engines and transmissions. The Base LX and SE sedans have a four cylinder engine that provides 177 horsepower. The EX and EX-L trims each have a more impressive 190 HP engine.

The optional V6 engine is available in the EX and EX-L which will ramp it up to 271 HP. The Accord LX-S, EX and EX-L coupes are equipped with the 4 cylinder, 190 horsepower engine and the EX-L models offer an optional 271 horsepower V6 engine.

Performance

Performance-wise, the 2012 Accord gets the driver where they want to go in comfort, if not style. It’s not considered the most fun car to drive and some people even think of driving it as “bland” and not “sporty.” However, it steers beautifully and can smoothly handle the twists and turns of country roads.

The Accord sedan gets 23 miles per gallon in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, with the four cylinder engine and the V6 getting 20/30 with automatic transmission. As for the 2012 Accord Coupe, the four cylinder engine gets 22/33 if i has an automatic transmission and 23/32 if it has a manual transmission. The coupe with the V6 engine has 19/29 with automatic and 17/26 with manual.

Exterior

Though some people find the Accord’s exterior attractive, other people believe it’s nothing to get excited about.

Interior

Reviewers used to prize the Accord for the high quality of its interior, but they find it not quite so praiseworthy in 2012. Still, one of the amazing things about the Accord, which is really a midsize car, is that it’s so roomy inside that the EPA considers it a large car.

Tall people will find the inside roomy. The sedan’s trunk is 14.7 cubic feet, which is considered small for the car’s size, but the coupe’s is 11.9 cubic feet, which is considered large for its size. The rear seats fold flat as one and don’t split, which limits the number of passengers the car can hold.

Safety

One of the things that make the Accord such a good family car is its safety record. The 2012 Accord sedan gets the top ratings from the government in all safety tests, enough to earn it a rare score of 10.0.

Reliability

J.D. Power gave the 2012 Accord a 4.5 out of 5 score in Predicted Reliability. It comes with a rather standard three year or 36,000 mile warranty, and a five year or 60,000 mile power-train warranty, and a corrosion warranty that lasts for five years or unlimited miles.

Still, the Kia Optima and Hyundai Sonata have longer warranties. The Accord also doesn’t offer free maintenance, even though the Volkswagen Passat and Toyota Camry have free maintenance programs that are in effect for a few years.

Pros

Reviewers enjoy the 2012 Accord’s handling and steering and appreciate its stellar safety record. It’s also a good bargain that has a high resale value.

Cons

The Accord doesn’t have all wheel drive, which is important if the driver lives in a place where there’s a lot of snow and ice in the winters. Some claim that the base four cylinder engine is underwhelming when it comes to power, and they’d pick the 190 horsepower four cylinder engine because it’s more powerful but has the same fuel efficiency.

Drivers complained that the car feels much larger than it is when it goes around turns. While some drivers might find this feeling of “bigness” comforting, other drivers don’t like it very much. The hinges of the trunk can also get in the way when cargo is stowed.

Competition

There are a few manufacturers that the Accord can be compared to, these include the Nissan Altima (MSRP $20,550; 23 city / 32 hwy), Chevy Malibu (MSRP $22,110; 22 city / 33 hwy), and the Hyundai Sonata (MSRP $20,895; 24 city / 35 hwy) which is in equal footing with the Kia Optima when it comes to fuel economy. Honda has been used as a standard by which these other vehicles have been made.

Overall Rating
78 out of 100

What others say:

“The 2012 Honda Accord is more enjoyable to drive than most other mid-size sedans or coupes, even if its specs aren’t all that much different.”Car Connection

“Accords are on the sporty side of the midsize class, with light but direct steering and well-controlled lean in corners.”Consumer Guide

“The well-rounded Accord family sedan is falling behind some newer and better competition.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“Ample passenger space; excellent visibility; good fuel economy in four-cylinder model; available coupe body style; high resale value. Intrusive road noise; disappointing interior quality; so-so braking distances; V6 lacks the get-up of rivals.”Edmunds

“The 2012 Honda Accord Sedan continues to thrive for a number of reasons. Its design is clean and simple, yet sophisticated enough to attract buyers young and old alike.”KBB
