2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

The 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe is a practical choice for families who want a bigger SUV. However, American car owners do not seem to be interested in its looks or the way that it drives, making us wonder whether there is a single car that can give what the America needs.

Understanding that style is not everything about, the new Hyundai Santa Fe is still worthy of a second look.

Engine

The latest Santa Fe is available in different trims so we decided to choose the top of the line Limited Model. It is equipped with a V6 3.5 Liter that delivers 276 horsepower and 248 lbs/ft of torque.

It is paired with an all wheel drive system and a 6-speed automatic transmission. According to the EPA, the new Santa Fe has a fuel efficiency rating of 26 highway/ 20 city mpg which is not bad for a powerful engine and a big body. It is clear that the 2012 Santa Fe can deliver what you need as far as fuel consumption is concerned.

Performance

The power delivered by the Santa Fe is acceptable, though it does not stand out in its class. It is a practical choice for someone who is looking for a competent vehicle in the market. Yes, the Hyundai Santa Fe is competent, only that it is not flashy enough to be noticed.

With its good handling and strong acceleration, we do not doubt that this SUV can keep up with the competition. Many car owners claim that the Santa Fe is not exciting to drive because its entirety seems too basic.

Commend Hyundai for providing the basics because it practically delivers what a driver primarily needs: power and good handling. If you are the kind of driver who chooses style over practicality, the Santa Fe is definitely not for you.

Exterior

The exterior design of the new Santa Fe is as simple as it can get. It does not bear the sportiness of the Tucson. The body of the Santa Fe looks rather serious than casual.

Interior

For an affordable SUV, you can expect that the interiors of the Santa Fe are not stellar. Like other made-to-be-affordable SUVs, the Santa Fe even used plastic in some parts. But we appreciate Hyundai’s effort to make the insides of the cabin roomy, functional and fairly attractive. In fact, for a person who doesn’t want much of everything, the cabin of the Santa Fe is no doubt satisfactory.

Another impressive feature of the Santa Fe is its large 34.2 cubic feet of cargo space even if all the seats are in use. Folding the rear seat will give you 78.2 cubic feet of storage space.

The stereo interface can support modern devices which makes it truly functional. There are no cutting edge technologies but the console is certainly useful.

Safety

The Hyundai Santa Fe has been given an overall score of “good” by the Insurance Institute on Highway Safety for scoring well in rear, roof strength, side impact, and frontal offset tests. It was given 4 out of 5 stars by the federal government for the frontal crash and rollover tests.

However, it only did 3 out of 5 stars in side crash tests. The overall rating by the government is therefore 3 out of 5 stars.

Reliability

The new Santa Fe comes with the basic 5-year warranty and the 10-year long powertrain warranty.

Pros & Cons

The Santa Fe has adequate power and competitive performance, but does not have stellar safety ratings.

Competition

If you are looking for a competitive and an affordable SUV, other options worth looking at along with the Santa Fe are the Toyota RAV4 (MSRP $24,685; 19 city / 27 hwy), the Mitsubishi Outlander, (MSRP $22,345; 23 city / 28 hwy), and the Mazda C7 (MSRP $22,190; 20 city / 27 hwy).

What others say:

“The 2012 Santa Fe is roomy and comfortable, but neither as space-efficient nor as well-detailed as in other Hyundai models.”Car Connection

“Stable overall, though our testers are divided on the steering and brakes. Some find them linear and predictable. Others think the steering is lazy at low speeds, and the brake pedal feels spongy.”Consumer Guide

“The nicely finished cabin is roomy and quiet, with comfortable seats, but head room is a bit tight for tall drivers.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“If you need the added utility of a third-row seat, eliminate the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe from your shopping list.”KBB

“Though it’s a little short on style, the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe is a respectable choice for a crossover SUV.”Edmunds

2012 Hyundai Equus

The 2012 Hyundai Equus greets the market with its updates, particularly the powerful engine and the spacious cabin that features a high-tech cockpit.

The first time we saw an Equus was in 2011 but Hyundai does not seem to be satisfied on sitting on its previous achievements; this is obvious in the new Equus.

Specifications

Torque: 376 lb-ft @ 5000 rpm Transmission: 8-Speed Automatic
0-60 mph: 6.0 seconds 1/4 Mile: 14.4 seconds
Available Trims & Engine
Option:Ultimate MSRP: $66,000; MPG: 15 city / 23 hwy

Engine

The 2012 Hyundai Equus is equipped with a V8 5.0 liter engine that delivers 429 horsepower and 376 lbs/ft of torque. The mighty engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. There were only few lucky people who have had the opportunity to drive the new Equus and most of them loved its powerful and smooth demeanor.

It is important to note that the Equus is a rear-wheel drive car that enters the arena where all-wheel drive super-luxury cars compete.

Performance

According to the EPA, the new Equus has a fuel economy rating of 23 mpg for highway and 15 mpg for city driving. Although the car delivers more power, the fuel efficiency is slightly sacrificed. Another thing that is noticeable with the new Equus is the lack-luster steering characteristics as well as the brakes that feel too soft.

If this is the first time you are looking at a super-luxury car, it is not surprising for the car owner not to notice the differences between Hyundai and a BMW or a Mercedes. But those who are already familiar can certainly distinguish.

Nevertheless, the finely tuned suspension of the Equus is good enough to handle its tasks. The electronic stability control efficiently assists the driver to keep the Equus in place during aggressive turns. However, you might need longer stopping distances because the brakes are too mushy and do not seem to provide adequate stopping capability compared to its competitors.

Exterior

The new Hyundai Equus has a smart exterior design that generates a serious impression. We give Hyundai credit for keeping the Equus appear simply formal. After all, it does not need to look sporty because the car is not designed to be in the first place.

Interior

Without a doubt, we can say that the interior of the new Equus meet the expectation. It provides ample space, both for the passengers and cargo. It has ventilated seats and reclining rear seats. When it comes to comfort, the Equus definitely brings it.

However, the quality of the interior, upon closer inspection, is not as good as what its competitors use. Lexus, for example, uses high grade leather that is softer than any other super-luxury car use.

Safety

Another thing that we love about the Equus is it is a Top Safety Pick for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It scored “Good” in all the tests done by the institution. Overall, the new Equus has nine air bags. It has anti lock brakes, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Moreover, the new Equus features a back up camera that supports the front and rear parking sensors.

Reliability

The Equus comes with the standard 5-year warranty, a 10-year warranty for the powertrain, and 24 hour assistance that lasts up to five years.

Pros

The new Equus is more affordable compared to other cars in its class. It has a comfortable and quiet cabin, with adequate power for a smooth and compelling drive.

Cons

The Equus does not have an all-wheel drive variant, has inferior quality for its interior, and poor braking distances.

The lower quality of the interior made way for the Equus to make it more affordable. Therefore we do not look at it as a major drawback. If you are looking for competitively priced luxury car, the 2012 Hyundai Equus is a great choice.

Competition

The Equus can be compared to the Lexus LS 460 (MSRP $67,630; 15 city / 24 hwy) and the Mercedes Benz S550 (MSRP $94,500; 15 city / 25 hwy).

Overall Rating
80 out of 100

What others say:

“Every square inch is filled with high-quality materials, but the Hyundai Equus doesn’t quite have the back-seat space of its rivals.”Car Connection

“The Equus has a comfortable ride, but motions can be a bit busy and handling is less than agile.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“If you feel you’ve reached a point in your life were you deserve to be pampered, but a shaky economy has your conservative side flinching at the thought of dropping six digits of dollars on a luxury sedan, the 2012 Hyundai Equus sedan may be your salvation.”KBB

“Enormous list of standard features; presidential-size backseat; supremely quiet; serene ride; phenomenal sound system; low price for the segment.”Edmunds

2012 Lexus IS

The 2012 Lexus IS is an upscale midsize car, a market segment in which the Japanese manufacturer has sometimes had a – perhaps surprising – degree of difficulty competing in.

Although it is not by any means a poor model, the IS does suffer from a few flaws when placed up against the often very accomplished competition.

Specifications

General Info
Vehicle Type: Sedan Base Price: $34,670.00
Fuel Tank Capacity: 17.2 gallons (65 liters) MPG: 19 city / 28 hwy
Dimensions

Horsepower: 204 HP Max RPM: 6400 RPM
Torque: 185 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm Transmission: 6-Speed Manual
0-60 mph: 7.9 seconds Maximum Speed: 144 mph (231 km/h)
Available Trims & Engine
Option:IS 250 RWD A/T MSRP: $34,965; MPG: 21 city / 30 hwy
Option:IS 250 AWD MSRP: $37,425; MPG: 19 city / 27 hwy
Option:IS 350 RWD MSRP: $40,220; MPG: 19 city / 27 hwy
Option:IS 350 AWD MSRP: $42,680; MPG: 18 city / 26 hwy
Option:IS 250C M/T MSRP: $41,190; MPG: 19 city / 28 hwy

Performance & Handling

The basic IS is the 250, which has a 2.5-liter V6 engine producing 204 horsepower. This is probably a little underpowered for a car of this type, and it makes the 250 disappointingly sluggish when it is confronted by steep gradients or the need for quick acceleration.

Much more satisfying is the next model up, the 350, whose 3.5 liter, 306 horsepower V6 engine is capable of handing normal driving conditions with ease. Both versions of the car offer a six-speed automatic transmission, but the 250 can also be ordered with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The Lexus IS does not handle particularly well; it has considerably more body roll than its rivals like BMW, and many reviewers have also criticized the steering for its lack of crispness. The convertible version of the car is fine when the roof is up; however, when it is opened, driving becomes less enjoyable as the car’s handling becomes quite lifeless and uninteresting.

Exterior

Lexus has succeeded here in terms of the exterior styling of the IS. The car looks appealing, with sharp lines and a slightly sporty feel that are in keeping with the image Lexus hopes to project.

It is not a car which will make onlookers’ jaws drop in amazement, but nobody is going to laugh at it either. Because of its relatively understated and classy looks, the IS should fit right in wherever it goes, whether in a city parking lot or at a posh hotel. The type of driver who chooses a Lexus is unlikely to be the type who will care about that, though.

Interior

This car is a bit of a mixed bag where interior style and comfort are concerned. The general atmosphere inside the car is one of calm and quality, with a luxurious feel to the leather seat trim.

Lexus has clearly paid careful attention to visual factors, with almost every other surface covered with high quality wood veneer or attractive metal trim. On the minus side, however, the IS does not have as much space for its passengers as the likes of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, especially in the back, and this badly lets it down as potential transport for a family.

Safety & Reliability

The 2012 Lexus IS scores quite well in government safety testing, with the IS 250 scoring a maximum five stars on the rollover test. The 350 version of the car only scores four stars, however.

Both models have a standard six or eight airbags, in the sedan and convertible respectively. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles, while the powertrain is warranted for six years or 72,000 miles, both what would be expected in this market segment.

Fuel consumption is acceptable although not superb for a car in this class, with the IS 350 returning figures of 20 mpg in city driving and 27 mpg on the open highway.

Competition

There are several known brands that the IS can be compared to in almost every aspect, these include the Audi A4 (MSRP $33,375; 22 city / 30 hwy), the BMW 3 series (MSRP $35,795; 23 city / 34 hwy), and the Mercedes Benz C300 (MSRP $38,895; 18 city / 25 hwy).

Overall Rating
72 out of 100

What others say:

“The 2012 Lexus IS 250 sedan is virtually identical to the IS 350 sedan–at least until you start the engine.”Car Connection

“IS corners with little body lean, secure grip, and an agile feel. The optional sport suspension and 18-inch tires furnish little cornering advantage. All IS models have electric power steering that is quick and informative.”Consumer Guide

“The IS has a plush, quiet interior with simple controls, but the car lacks the sporty feel found in some competitors. ”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“If BMW’s 3 Series serves as the definition of “sport sedan,” then the Lexus IS 250 and IS 350 might be seen as the “Grand Tourers” of the category. With a nimble chassis and responsive powertrains the lineup remains recreational, but all iterations of the Lexus IS provide a level of compliant composure the Germans rarely deliver – at least in this size category.”KBB

“The 2012 Lexus IS 250 scores points for attractive styling and unshakable reliability, but comes up short in regard to practicality and power.”Edmunds

2012 Ford Transit Connect

When it comes to commercial vans, the 2012 Ford Transit Connect is among the top choices. It is easy to drive, it has high-tech features, and it has good looks. If you want to have more cargo space and more power, there are other options to consider.

But because the Transit Connect is made for a few exclusive purposes, we do not need to ask much. After all, Ford did a good job in putting a lot of thought into the Transit Connect.

Horsepower: 136 HP Max RPM: 6300 RPM
Torque: 128 lb-ft @ 4750 rpm Transmission: 4-Speed Automatic
Available Trims & Engine
Option:XLT Van MSRP: $23,095; MPG: 21 city / 27 hwy
Option:XLT Wagon MSRP: $23,660; MPG: 22 city / 27 hwy
Option:XLT Premium Wagon MSRP: $23,810; MPG: 22 city / 27 hwy

Engine

There is only one engine available on the Transit Connect, the 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 136 horsepower and 128 lbs/ft of torque. It only has one transmission available which is the 4-speed automatic.

From the small engine, we cannot expect much power but we can expect a fair rating when it comes to fuel economy. It has a fuel economy rating of 27/21 mpg highway/city, an average in its class. Its fuel efficiency is better than bigger vans.

Performance

The handling of the Transit Connect is impressive. In tight spots, the van drives well. Its low center of gravity helps reduce body roll. Being nimble enough, the Transit Connect is ideal for city use.

The Transit Connect can carry cargo up to 1,600 lbs which is okay if you do not have much to tow. Definitely, the Transit Connect is not right for you if you are looking for a van that can tow heavier loads.

Exterior

The Transit Connect’s appearance gives the impression that it is a busy urban van. It has a tall profile that tells onlookers there is room for some more. A van with a car platform gives the idea that it can give the best of both worlds.

Interior

Durability prevails over luxury when it comes to the interior of the Transit Connect. It has hard plastics which makes the interior very utilitarian. To make the interior more functional, Ford added innovations that can help small enterprises.

Optionally, aspiring Transit Connect owners can have Ford Work Solutions that help the driver know if all the essential things are in the car. The in-car computer system allows for WiFi hotspots too. If you need to print receipts, you can even install a printer.

Although designed for work, the seating is comfortable. They are basic yet functional. The floor has a low load profile which allows the driver and the passenger to get in and out of the car easily. One drawback is the less than comfortable backseat, which does not make the Transit Connect ideal for big families.

Safety

The Transit Connect has great front outward visibility, has anti-lock brakes, optional rear sensors, passive anti-theft system, and side and front airbags. The federal rating gives 2 out of five stars to the Transit connect for not scoring well in their crash tests.

Reliability

The 2012 Transit Connect has the standard 3-year limited warranty and a 5-year powertrain warranty.

Pros

The new Transit Connect’s best attribute is its nimbleness – it is easy to drive and easy to maneuver when dealing with corners and parking. The electronics are business oriented and the cargo is versatile.

Cons

The Transit Connect scored low in crash tests and has a limited payload capacity.

The 2012 Ford Transit Connect is a good choice for business owners who want to have alternative to larger vans.

Competition

Other car makers that offer similar capabilities as the Transit Connect, the XLT wagon option can very well be compared to the Dodge Grand Caravan (MSRP $20,995; 17 city / 25 hwy). As a van, the TC could easily be matched against the Ram Cargo Van (MSRP $22,420; 17 city / 25 hwy).

Overall Rating
64 out of 100

What others say:

“It chalks up a few civilian sales a year, but the Ford Transit Connect van is primarily aimed at small businesses that put its very tall cargo area and somewhat rudimentary cabin to good use.”Car Connection

“A low center of gravity and good steering feedback contribute to handling that can almost be described as nimble. Transit Connect admirably tackles the urban jungle. It’s generally stable on the highway, though its tall build makes it susceptible to gusty crosswind wander.”Consumer Guide

“Intended primarily for commercial use, this tall van is based on the Focus and was designed by Ford of Europe. It packs an impressive amount of room inside a small footprint.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“While the 2012 Ford Transit Connect might appeal to off-beat consumers looking for a unique ride, its first mission is to serve the business community. With its elevated roof, available 255-degree-opening rear doors and seemingly infinite equipment and graphics packages, the Transit Connect van is far superior to any small pickup or car-based crossover.”KBB

“Easy to park and maneuver in tight spaces; above average fuel economy; large, versatile cargo area; clever business-oriented electronics features.”Edmunds

2012 Hyundai Accent

The 2012 Hyundai Accent has a beautiful exterior, outstanding fuel economy rating, adequate cargo space, and a spacious cabin.

Almost everything in the new Accent is truly amiable, leaving its forerunner, the 2011 Hyundai Accent, behind.

With all the competitive features, the new Accent is truly a better choice.

Option:SE Hatchback MSRP: $15,895; MPG: 30 city / 40 hwy

Engine

The 2012 Accent has a 4-cylinder 1.6 liter engine that delivers 138 horsepower and 123 lbs/ft of torque. The engine can be paired either with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.

It is interesting to note that these apply to all trims including the fuel efficiency rating of 40 highway/31 city mpg. No matter which model you choose, you are guaranteed to get all the goods.

Performance

As should be expected, the new Accent is not the strongest car in its class. But we’d like to stress that it is one of the strongest and most fuel efficient in its class. You must also take into consideration that the new Accent is no hybrid at all.

You will be surprised at how smooth the shifting is. We give credit to Hyundai for making the manual transmission as good as its automatic counterpart. But since it does not have much muscle, you should not expect the Accent to be stellar in passing maneuvers.

Nevertheless, the Hyundai is no doubt a good city cruiser. It is quiet and comfortable although not as sporty as other cars.

Exterior

The exterior for the new Accent is fresh and sporty. The fine lines and organic curves indeed make the Accent one of the most stylish cars of this year.

Interior

Give credit to Hyundai for putting a lot of thought in its cabin design. Although the car is not as sporty as others, it has an interior design that can be described as upscale. It has a good quality that you will not usually find in other cars in its class.

The console for temperature and radio control is simple and easy to use unlike the technology used by its competitors that we often find as complicated and somewhat confusing. There is enough legroom and headroom that even 6-feet tall passengers can sit comfortably.

There are minor issues about comfort in the cabin though even if there is much passenger and driver space, because Hyundai did not put padding to the center console arm rest. We wish that Hyundai improves this aspect in its future editions.

Safety

The 2012 Accent has four wheel anti-lock brakes, 6 airbags, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist and vehicle stability management system.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave a “good” score to the new Accent for the rear crash test, roof strength, and front offset. The Accent received an “acceptable” score in side impact tests. On the other hand, the federal government gave the car 4 out of 5 stars. It was also given 4 out of 5 stars in rear, front, side tests and rollover risk by the same institution.

Reliability

It is interesting to mention that the new Accent is covered by a program that predicts the value of your car after two years from the date of purchase. It is the Hyundai Assurance Trade-in Value Guarantee.

When you trade your car that is covered by this program between 48 and 24 months after the date of purchase, you will get the predicted value or more for your trade. The Hyundai Accent comes with the standard 10-year warranty, a 7-year corrosion warranty, and a 5-year 24-hour roadside assistance.

Pros & Cons

The new Hyundai Accent has a long warranty, good fuel economy and an exciting style. The new Accent has poor rear visibility.

Overall, the 2012 Hyundai Accent brings the best qualities in its class, making it a good choice for budget conscious car owners.

Competition

There are many other manufacturers that can be compared to the Accent, these include the Nissan Versa (MSRP $10,990; 27 city / 36 hwy), Toyota Yaris (MSRP $14,115; 30 city / 38 hwy), the Ford Fiesta Sedan (MSRP $16,600; 29 city / 38 hwy), and the Chevrolet Sonic (MSRP $13,865; 26 city / 35 hwy).

Overall Rating
68 out of 100

What others say:

“With the company’s brand-new 1.6-liter four-cylinder under its hood, and a beefed-up suspension, the 2012 Hyundai Accent hits a few benchmarks all at once. It bests the subcompact class in fuel economy, and takes out most of the compact class as well, while it dials up better straight-line performance and handling than it had before.”Car Connection

“All versions display a modicum of body lean in fast turns, and steering feel isn’t sports-car sharp. Still, it feels nimble enough to be mildly entertaining to drive. It’s a small tradeoff for Accent’s good ride quality.”Consumer Guide

“The sedan with an automatic attained 31 mpg overall, and 32 mpg for the stick-shift hatchback in our tests.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“The 2012 Hyundai Accent is completely updated from the model it replaces, boasting a new look, new engine and a host of standard and available features.”KBB

“Larger, sharper and more fuel-efficient, the redesigned 2012 Hyundai Accent deserves buyer consideration as an affordable, stylish new car.”Edmunds
