2012 Kia Sportage

The 2012 Kia Sportage falls in the middle of the ranking for compact and affordable SUVs.

The modern styling, affordability and the list of standard features may give the Sportage a win but a number of buyers might not be pleased with its poor visibility and performance.

It might be the perfect compact SUV for those who go after affordability but not necessarily for performance.

Engine

The Kia Sportage base model comes with a 4-cylinder 2.4 liter engine that delivers 176 horsepower and 168 lbs/ft of torque. It is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission but prospective owners have the automatic transmission as an option. If you need more muscle, you can have the SX trim that is equipped with a 4 cylinder 2.0 liter turbocharged engine. It gives 260 horsepower and 269 lbs/ft of torque.

Performance

There is no doubt that the Sportage can deliver what you need when driving around town. However, the base model cannot bring the power that you need during certain situations, especially if you frequently drive on the highway.

The SX model with its turbocharged engine will be appropriate for this driving condition. However, there are other issues such as the imprecise steering and less than stellar suspension tuning that can give you a rough ride.

Exterior

You will appreciate Kia’s effort of putting lots of thought about its exterior. The Sportage looks as sharp as the pricier European SUVs. The headlights have an organic shape.

It has sleek detailing on the front grille and the front bumper. Its lines are well done, profound enough but not over spoken. It has bold rims that complement the almost minimalist design of the body.

Interior

The cabin of the Sportage has adequate room and plenty of standard features. There are ports that let you connect to modern devices and some of the controls are cleverly placed on the steering wheel.

However, the seats seem too firm which makes it quite too stiff. You will certainly have no problems about space but you can feel a little bit uncomfortable during very long rides. Another issue that you will encounter when you are seated inside is the poor rear visibility.

Safety

The all wheel drive models of the Kia Sportage have been given 5 out of 5 stars by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for scoring well in their tests. The front wheel drive model gets 4 out of 5 stars. The Sportage is a “Top Safety Pick” of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for scoring “good” in roof strength, rear, side and front crash tests.

Reliability

The Kia Sportage comes with a 10 year powertrain warranty – the longest in its class. It also has the standard warranty that lasts for 5 years, and the corrosion warranty that also lasts for 5 years.

Pros

The Kia Sportage is perhaps one of the sharpest looking compact SUVs. Having the base model gives you plenty of standard features. The quality of the interior is better than the interior for other SUVs in its class. The cabin provides plenty of space and the turbocharged engine gives lots of power.

Cons

The seats of the Sportage are stiff and the back seats do not recline or slide. The base model is underpowered. The rear visibility is poor.

The 2012 Kia Sportage is not perfect, but it can give you what you need as long as you choose the right model.

The small SUV segment include the likes of the Nissan Rogue (MSRP $22,070; 22 city / 28 hwy), Honda CRV (MSRP $22,495; 23 city / 31 hwy), and the Ford Escape (MSRP $21,440; 23 city / 28 hwy).

Overall Rating
74 out of 100

What others say:

“We think the 2012 Kia Sportage is one of the best-looking compact utes, with its deft mashup of SUV and hatchback lines.”Car Connection

“Body lean is well-checked in fast turns, but the steering feels somewhat light and lifeless, at least on the LX and EX. The steering is more firm and direct in the SX. Its moves are sharper all around, but we don’t think it’s worth the tradeoff of a harsher ride.”Consumer Guide

“The Sportage has nimble handling and a civilized powertrain. But it has a stiff ride and pronounced road noise, and acceleration is leisurely.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“The 2012 Kia Sportage SUV has a slight increase in fuel economy for both the 2.4-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged engines.”KBB

“Sharp styling inside and out; more fun to drive than other crossovers; powerful and efficient turbo engine in SX trim; plenty of premium features; intuitive controls. Stiff-legged ride; backseat doesn’t slide or recline; less cargo capacity than other crossovers.”Edmunds

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG is quite possibly the sports car that most enthusiasts have been clamoring for.

Right off the bat you are looking at 30 percent less fuel consumption than previous models without a loss of performance in this phenomenal roadster.

Performance

The SL 63 AMG delivers 536 HP while an optional performance package increases that figure to a spectacular 564 HP with 590 lb-ft of torque for fast acceleration and response. This plays out to a time of 4.3 seconds for 0 to 100 km per hour.

The transmission is the AMG SpeedShift MCT-7 with several options to adjust performance and fuel consumption through different modes. This is basically designed for any situation that requires different transmission performance and places control in the driver’s hands.

Other components are specialized to improve performance and effectiveness such as floating calipers and an electronic parking brake. There are upgrades to increase the performance on the braking components, however the standard package is exceptionally effective.

Exterior

The body of the new Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG is true to the Mercedes-Benz style yet has some distinct features that make it stand out from the brand. Incorporated in this model are large air dams that fit perfectly with the customary eloquent style while letting you know this is a speed machine and not a touring vehicle.

…and More

Chrome struts give off a sophisticated look while the daytime eyes are LED powered. The front end really draws your attention with the double louver chrome grill and similarly finished side vents. The spoiler is low and the rear facade is sleek for a nice overall appearance, front to back.

Many of the other components are what you would expect from the AMG while slightly updated for the benefit of the vehicle. The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG is a must have for anyone that prefers performance, speed and sophistication in their roadster for the ultimate driving experience.

2012 Chevrolet Traverse

The 2012 Chevrolet Traverse is an affordable, midsized SUV. Though it’s not flashy — and how many midsized SUVs are? The Traverse is stylish enough and great for those who need to haul people and other cargo.

It is a family friendly SUV and has more room inside than any other crossover. It can tow up to 5,200 pounds if properly equipped.

Option:LTZ FWD MSRP: $39,035; MPG: 17 city / 24 hwy
Option:LTZ AWD MSRP: $41,035; MPG: 16 city / 23 hwy

Engine

The Traverse has a 3.6 liter V6 engine which gives the LS and LTD models 281 horsepower and the LTZ model 288 hp. It is aided by a 6-speed automatic transmission. The front wheel-drive Traverse gets about 17 miles per gallon in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, with the all wheel drive model getting a little less.

Performance

The V6 engine did what it had to do but left many people longing for a little more vigor. However, the Traverse accelerates satisfactorily and maneuvers well. The shifting is smooth and fast and the steering responsive. Some reviewers were especially impressed with the braking.

Exterior

Many found the exterior more stylish and attractive than most midsized SUVs.

Interior

The cabin has room for eight passengers with the third row that can comfortably accommodate adults. However, many found the interior unappealing, with a little too much hard plastic.

Among the attractive features included were satellite radio (subscription needs to be renewed after three months), climate control for the front and rear, and cruise control. High tech options like a navigation system are available for the 2LT and LTZ models of the Traverse. The gauges are bright and readable.

For more luxury, a driver should look into the Buick Enclave (MSRP $36,500; 17 city / 24 hwy), or the GMC Acadia (MSRP $32,835; 17 city / 24 hwy) or the Ford Flex (MSRP $29,465; 17 city / 24 hwy).

The Traverse’s vaunted cargo space is enormous. It has 116.4 cubic feet of space when the second and third row seats are folded. The 2LT and LTZ models, and only those models, also have a standard a power lift gate. Even when all the rows of seats are up there’s still 24.4 cubic feet of space.

Safety

The 2012 Traverse received good marks across the board for safety. It consistently received the highest or near highest scores for front, side, rollover and roof strength tests.

Reliability

J.D. Power gave the Traverse high marks for reliability. The Traverse comes with a three year or 36,000 mile basic warranty and a five year or 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. However, the vehicle has gotten one recall because of a problem with the windshield wipers and washers.

Pros

The third row is big enough for grown-ups, which is uncommon in a midsized SUV, and it handles well. Reviewers also appreciated its high safety ratings and good fuel economy. The cargo space is also fantastic.

Cons

Many found the interior pedestrian at best. Also, the automatic transmission isn’t as sensitive as it should be. Overall, the Traverse, a good workhorse of an SUV, isn’t as sexy as some of its competition.

Overall Rating
79 out of 100

What others say:

“The strengths of the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse lie in its roomy, comfortable interior. It’s almost a minivan in terms of raw space, but the lack of sliding doors does put it at a slight disadvantage in a couple of ways.”Car Connection

“Traverse is a large vehicle, but it’s reasonably agile with little lean in corners. Accurate steering and responsive brakes contribute to making Traverse easy to maneuver despite its size.”Consumer Guide

“The Traverse is one of GM’s impressive large, car based three-row SUVs. It has a spacious and quiet interior, with a third-row seat that’s roomy enough to accommodate adults.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports

“If you need a vehicle big enough to haul your family and a 5,400-pound trailer, but you don’t want a big, gas-thirsty SUV, the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse is the perfect solution. Roomy yet manageably sized, the Traverse is the ideal family wagon.”KBB

“With its stylish good looks, spacious cabin, carlike handling and decent fuel economy, the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse has much to offer buyers who need maximum passenger capacity in a more maneuverable package.”Edmunds

2012 Hamann Hawk Mercedes-Benz SLS Roadster

The 2012 Hamann Hawk Mercedes-Benz SLS Roadster is an incredibly powerful sports car.

The original Mercedes-Benz car has been given several design changes, the most significant one being the installation of a 6.2-liter Hamann engine.

To help squeeze every last available bit of energy from the engine, the car is fitted with a special sports air filter and a high-performance, stainless steel exhaust system.

Performance

The end result is an engine that can generate an amazing 636 hp and 501 lb-ft of torque. Because the engine is installed in a car built from ultra-modern materials, meaning the weight is greatly reduced, the car has a top speed of 198mph. When set in race mode, the car can go from 0-60 in 3.5 seconds.

Red & Black

The visual design of the car is based around a red and black theme, both externally and internally. The two black, leather-covered bucket seats have red trim. They are separated by a console made from red carbon and red trim is used on the floor, the dashboard and the instrument panel.

Red colored carbon is also used to decorate the door sill protectors, the door handles and the air inlets.

Interior

The steering wheel in the original model has been replaced with a smaller wheel that has been ergonomically designed. The pedals are made from black, anodized aluminum. Externally, the car has been given a predominately red matte lacquer, although the hood and the 21″ wheels are black.

Exterior

In front, the 2012 Hamann Hawk Mercedes-Benz SLS Roadster has a front apron instead of the bumper on the original car. This apron gives better road holding because its shape helps to counteract lifting forces on the front axle.

The air inlets are considerably larger than on the original, reflecting the bigger demand for air the Hamann engine has. The addition of LED lighting strips adds to the overall impression of a car with improved dynamics.
