In the 1970's, the Pontiac division of General Motors added two small car lines in their product offerings. The second line of cars was branded as the Pontiac Sunbird. It was first brought to the public's attention in 1975 for the 1976 model year. It continued for 5 more years before taking a 2 year hiatus, with which in 1982, the manufactured Sunbirds were called the Pontiac J2000. Pontiac resumed the manufacture of the Sunbird in 1983 until 1995, when it was discontinued and replaced in the Pontiac lineup by the Pontiac Sunfire. The Sunbird was available for 18 years all in all and had 4 body styles the coupe, convertible, station wagon, and hatchback styles. This subcompact vehicle that can seat four passengers had its design based on the Chevrolet Vega, another GM car.
The GM plants in Lordstown, Ohio and Ramos Arizpe, Mexico built the Pontiac Sunbird. The Sunbird was then known in Mexico as the Chevrolet Cavalier until its last 4 years.
