When the Pontiac Grand Am was discontinued in 2004, the Pontiac division of General Motors started production of its replacement, the Pontiac G6. The Pontiac G6 is a mid-size car which shares the GM Epsilon platform with other GM cars, the Chevrolet Malibu and Saab 9-3. The Grand Am was given a more conservative look than its predecessor. For example, the Grand Am's ribbed cladding and rear spoiler gave way to standard sheet metal in the G6. Added to the G6 was a panoramic sunroof option and a starting system that can be remotely operated. The V6 and GT were available for the G6 when it was first made available. Engine changes happened in the car's 2007 edition, as well as added safety features such as side torso and curtain airbags.
The launch of the G6 in 2004 was highly publicized as all 276 people who watched The Oprah Winfrey show's season premier in fall 2004 received a G6. The G6 will last be produced in 2009 for the 2010 model year, after which the Pontiac division will be discontinued altogether.
