Hyundai’s Sonata 4-door sedan is packed with value. But it is most often overlooked in its category due largely to its very simple and almost unappealing exterior. A 5-year/60,000 mile warranty is presented with the car and a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty is offered on the drive train. The Korean car company has dressed up this 5-passenger sedan’s roomy interior with high quality cabin materials. Plus, an electronic navigation system is an option with the Limited trim. Cabin capacity is a spacious 105.4 cubic feet. Cargo capacity is 16.3 cu. ft.
Two gasoline engines power the 2009 Sonata. The smaller engine is the 2.4 liter, DOHC 4-cylinder, 175 horsepower at 6,000 RPM. A bigger, more robust 3.3 liter, DOHC V6, 249 horsepower at 6,000 RPM is on the higher end variants. The base GLS model is fitted with a 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive and an option of 5-speed Shiftronic automatic with OD. The SE and Limited models have the 5-speed Shiftronic AT. Fuel economy by the Sonata ranges from 21/32 mpg city/highway on the base GLS 5-speed manual to 19/29 mpg in the V6 SE 5-speed automatic.
The Sonata drive is handled by standard front independent double-wishbone suspension and rear independent multi-link suspension systems. Additional safety is provided by an Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Traction Control System (TCS). Stopping power is managed by 4-wheel disc brakes with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), and brake assist.
