Manufactured by Ford Motor Company, the Ford Escort is a compact car which replaced the Ford Pinto subcompact car. The Ford Escort was launched in 1981. It was the first front-wheel-drive car produced by Ford in the North America. Escort also replaced Ford Fiesta which was imported from Europe. Ford Fiesta was more mechanically advanced compared to Escort but it was too small.
The first Escort in America was supposed to share similar components with the European Mk III. It was introduced as a two-door hatchback, and as a four-door station wagon. The following year, the four-door hatchback followed. The Ford Escort came to be one the company’s most successful models in the 80s. It earned much better reputation and good reviews compared with the Ford Pinto. Ford Pinto can be remembered because of the issues it faced on safety matters. It was considered the best-selling car in the United States after two years in the market.
