The BMW X3 is a sports utility vehicle (SUV) which is the German automaker’s second entry in the SUV market after the X5. The X3 design is that of a compact crossover SUV which BMW developed in collaboration with an Austrian company, Magna Steyr, which also manufactures under contract with the German firm all of the X3s. The BMW X3 was launched in late 2003 with a four-wheel drive system called the xDrive which allows transparent intervention on vehicle instability prior to the driver being aware of the potential problem.

The first generation of BMW X3 was met with criticisms because of its austere, minimalist interior made of plastic components, and harsh ride. Various upgrades X3 have been adopted to stem these complaints. Some sectors of the motoring media, however, appreciated the BMW X3 for its xDrive feature, hill-descent control and an under body safe for rough terrain. To be a complete off-road vehicle, it was suggested that the X3 has to have a gear reduction that would allow some very slow driving on rough terrain.
