If you like taking friends for a fast joyride, sitting behind the wheels of a car belonging to the BMW 8-Series would be just fine. BMW marketed this series in the US between 1991 and 1997 as a two-door 2+2 coupe with a V8 or V12 engine. All variants of the 8-series could accommodate two rear passengers, unlike its direct competitor, the Mercedes Benz SL Roadster which is only a two-seater.
The cars under BMW 8-Series have an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph), but with the limiters removed this could reach an estimated 299 km/h (186 mph). Initial sales of the 8-Series were good but revenues were affected by the oil price hikes and the global recession of the early 1990s. Eventually, the BMW 8-Series was pulled out of the North American market in 1997 and worldwide production was totally stopped in 1999. There are unconfirmed reports, however, that BMW plans to revive the 8-series in a four-dour coupe to match the Mercedes Benz CLS-Class market entries.
