Washington, District of Columbia, more popularly called now as Washington D.C., is the national capital of the United States of America. It is the country’s seat of power because it is where the White House is. It is also where the two other branches of the federal government are found. It is even home to 174 embassies.

Washington has a total area of 61.4 square miles of which almost 90 % is land area. It is used to be 100 square miles but the southern portion was given back to the Commonwealth of Virginia. It has a humid subtropical climate. It usually has the hottest temperatures during the months of July and August. The average high temperature in the place is 80 0F. In the Great Blizzard of 1899 it experienced it coldest day when temperature went down to a very low – 15 0F.

A very unique thing about the city is that it has more Black or African Americans than White. A survey conducted in 2007 showed that more than half, approximately 55 %, of the population are African Americans. Only 36.3 % are White.

Many offices like law firms, lobbying groups and professional organizations are situated in the city perhaps because they want and need to be close to the seat of the federal government.

Apart from being home to the seats of power, embassies and major firms and organizations, it also houses many historical sites and museums. These attract a lot of tourists into the city. There are also a lot of cultural and performing arts establishments that can be found here. They also bring in a lot of visitors into the place. It is in fact considered as the national center for the arts.
