Named after General Moses Cleaveland, Cleveland was the first settlement founded by the Conneticut Land Company of which the General was an investor of. Early on, population was low due to the amount being charged for the lots in the city. During the early 1800’s Cleveland became a market town where farmers traded and sold their crops and merchants sold their Eastern goods. Even with this, Cleveland still was not able to prosper as much due to the underdeveloped road networks. It was only during the late 19th century when the city became an important industrial city.
Cleveland was the first city to be lighted electronically in 1879 and boasts of the first traffic light ever made in August 1914. The city is also home to the Rock and Roll of Fame. The first coffee drip maker was invented by Vincent Marotta and the Life Savers Candy by Clarence Crain both from Cleveland City.
When in Cleveland, don’t forget to drop by the Rock and Roll of Fame & Museum and have a rocking good time experiencing music and stories of famous rock legends. Get a dose of science and interactivity at The Great Lakes Science Center. If culture and the arts is what one is looking for, do visit the University Circle which is home to majority of Cleveland’s museums such as the Western Reserve Society, Cleveland Orchestra and the Botanical Garden.
Cleveland is a hip stop for someone who wants to experience culture, history, and entertainment in one place. Dining is a treat in this city too as there are many restaurants and club scenes that will whet the appetite. Whatever it may be, Cleveland is the place to be.
