2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Engineered to be a significant step forward in the arena of cutting-edge performance technology, the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 stands out as the fastest Camaro ever marketed by Chevrolet.

Performance

It is also the most technically sophisticated car ever introduced in its class, and will be powered by a supercharged V-8 engine generating approximately 550 horsepower.

But the Camaro ZL1 is more than just powerful; it features a highly innovative chassis and suspension set-up that will yield balanced, track-capable handling and braking power to enhance its increased engine output. Chevrolet is planning an official release of the Camaro ZL1 at the start of 2012.

The main goal during this car’s evolution was to design a completely unique Camaro, a Camaro that would achieve maximum lap times on top-rated road-racing circuits while maintaining exceptional driving characteristics on public streets.

To accomplish this objective, Chevrolet engineers advanced many of the previous Camaro’s operating systems and integrated cutting edge technologies like electric power steering, and Magnetic Ride Control – the fastest responding suspension system available.

More Performance Details

  • The LSA 6.2L Supercharged V8 Engine produces 550 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque. Features include: heat resistant aluminum alloy cylinder heads, inter cooled supercharger system, lightweight reciprocating assembly, hyper eutectic pistons, Eaton supercharger (four-lobe rotors), and piston oil squirter.
  • Transmission – A Tremec TR-6060 6-speed manual, has an increased torque limit. It has a dual-mass flywheel with a twin-disc clutch for simple operation and smooth shifting. A brand new short shifter changes the gears.
  • Exhaust – The Camaro ZL1 comes with dual-mode exhausts, which will change the general sound level with a change in engine rpm. The dual-mode exhausts are precisely tuned for the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and give it a trademark sound signature.
  • Drivetrain – Modified to have a more robust drive shaft and rear axle structure, with a bigger and tougher cast iron differential casing, more muscular axles, and durable LSD (limited-slip differential).
  • Suspension – The ZL1 suspension features Magnetic Ride Control, and is found on just a small lineup of the best performance cars in the world. It makes use of advanced magneto rheological damper technology for very precise shock damping and optimized body control, giving superb performance in normal driving and track driving.
  • Brakes and Steering – The Camaro ZL1 has a state-of-the-art track-ready braking setup which comes complete with two-piece 14.6 in. front rotors and six piston calipers, and 14.4 in. rear rotors and four piston calipers. The ZL1 also has an all new electric power steering system to guarantee precise control for high performance driving.

Exterior

The front of the Camaro ZL1 has an aluminum hood and a raised insert. The face has a front splitter and vertical fog lights with air intakes for cooling the brakes. The hood includes air extractors mounted on the front to guide air effectively about the car.

At the rear of the Camaro you will find a diffuser and spoiler to give the car better aerodynamics. The wheels are 20-inch forged aluminum, encased in Goodyear Supercar F2 tires which were specifically designed for the Camaro ZL1.

All of the regular Camaro paint colors will be available for the ZL1, however black will be the only interior color available. The distinctive external characteristics of the ZL1 are highlighted by a black center segment in the hood.

Interior

The interior of the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will feature heated leather seats with synthetic-fiber inserts and ZL1 logo on the head-supports, an instrument panel accented with microfiber suede, and will come with the same content as the 2SS package. Other highlights include:

  • Six-way power seats, both driver and passenger
  • Exclusive instrument and door panel inserts – ZL1-logo band plates
  • Audio controls on the steering wheel for Bluetooth
  • Wireless Personal Device Interface Module (PDIM) and USB-port
  • Audio system by Boston Acoustics
  • Reverse Parking Assist System
  • Rearview mirror displayed camera system
