The Ford Excursion enjoyed its reign as Ford Motor’s largest SUV for five years – from 2000 to 2005. As a large (with a gross weight over 3,900 kilograms), yet sleekly designed heavy-duty vehicle, the Ford Excursion was marketed as direct competition against smaller SUVs like the Suburban model by Chevrolet, which did not enjoy the Excursion’s exemption from CAFE and USEPA regulations. The CAFE, or Corporate Average Fuel Economy regulates the fuel economy of SUVs, which the Ford Excursion was exempted to because it was classified as a both usable for rural and commercial purposes, not just as a sport utility vehicle.

The Ford Excursion model was discontinued in 2005 to make way for a new version of the Expedition, which has extended its length. Ford’s Louisville plant in Kentucky produced the last Ford Excursion in September 2005. The last of the Excursion unites were sold in Mexico as models for the year 2006.

Since the Ford Bronco was discontinued in 1997, Ford Expedition has taken its place as the Ford Motor Company’s star Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). The Ford Explorer was introduced to the public by the Ford Motor Company in 1990 to substitute the Ford Bronco II. The Bronco II was smaller compared to the Explorer, which is classified as a mid-size SUV (sport utility vehicle). Primarily available in North America, it used to be manufactured in the Missouri plant of Ford in Hazelwood, which shut down operations in early 2006. The Ford Explorer Sport Trac, mostly made available in North America, has been manufactured since 2000 by the Ford Motor Company. Based on the highly successful Ford Explorer SUV, is mid-sized in structure, making it smaller than a Ford F-Series van and larger than a Ford Ranger. Demand for the Ford Explorer Sport Trac on its initial release was so high; there was a 3 month waiting list for interested buyers. In the market today, its competitors include the Chevrolet Avalanche, which bigger in size, and the Honda Ridgeline.

Being the first sport utility truck with a body-on-frame design, the model was built on a chassis of the Ford Explorer which was lengthened. An addition to the chassis was a pickup bed, made of plastic composite, is located behind the SUV doors. The Ford Explorer Sport Trac has a rugged, athletic look, with full rubber covering in the SUV’s flooring.
