Used Mercury Montego

Mercury Montego 150

The Mercury Montego was first introduced to the car market in 1968. The Mercury division of Ford Motors manufactured this line until 1976. It is assumed that the name is homage to the Jamaican city of Montego Bay. The Montego brand has actually been used in 1967 on the Meteor line, which was available in Canada as Meteor Montego. The Meteor Montego was the upscale trim of the Meteor line. After 1976, the brand was used for two years, in 2005 until 2007. The Montego in 1968 stood as an upgraded, more luxurious version of the Mercury Comet, until the Montego took over its slot in the line of Mercury cars when the Comet was discontinued the year after. The Montego also had a variant, the Cyclone, which was marketed as a high performance version, manufactured until 1971. The Montego’s “cousin” in the Ford line is the Ford Torino, which like other Mercury-Ford cousins, share a platform and most of its features.

The inaugural generation of the Montego came in four body styles. A four-door sedan, a convertible, a two-door hardtop, and a station wagon were available, with two trims: base trim and an upscale MX trim. A new trim, a luxury MX Brougham was added in 1969.

In 1970, two new body styles were added, the four-door hardtop and MX Villager station wagon. However, the convertible style was discontinued the same year. The 1970-1971 Montegos had a design that many took notice, including grille centers and a hood that thrust forward. Furthermore, Brougham and Villager models in the 1970 were given headlamps that were concealed. The line was discontinued in 1976 amidst an impending energy crisis. The 2005 – 2007 line was renamed Mercury Taurus.

Used Mercury Monterey

Mercury Monterey 150

In the history of Ford Motor’s Mercury brand, there have been two kinds of Montereys – a full-size near-luxury car and a minivan. The Mercury Monterey car was introduced by the Ford Motor Company’s Mercury division in 1950. From 1955, its body style was shared with other Mercury vehicles, namely the Mercury Marquis (generally considered to be an upscale version of the Monterey), Montclair, and Park Lane. For its first five years, the Mercury Monterey was considered as Mercury’s premier model, until the Montclair’s appearance in 1955. However, the Monterey outlasted the Montclair. The Montclair, along with the Park Lane, was discontinued in 1968. After the Park Lane and Montclair were discontinued, the Marquis-Monterey body style was copied by other Ford cars, namely the Ford Galaxie, LTD, and Custom. This entry-level high-end, and mid-range line was the only Mercury car that was produced throughout the entire decade of the 1960s. The Monterey was last produced in 1974.

The Mercury Monterey brand resurfaced in the early 2000s. It became a minivan that was Mercury’s version of the Ford Freestar. Both Freestar and Monterey started production in 2002 and was last produced in 2006. The Moneterey minivan was made to fill the void that the Mercury Villager, a minivan co-produced with Nissan, was discontinued in 2002. The Monterey and Freestar had a seating capacity of seven passengers. Monterey had more luxury features and had a more powerful 4.2 L V6 engine standard engine. Thus, only more than 32,000 Montereys were sold in its three year run.

Used Mercury Mountaineer

Mercury Mountaineer 150

The Mercury brand name of the Ford Motor Company began producing the mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) named Mercury Mountaineer in 2002. This was two years after the introduction of its cousin, the Ford Explorer. The Explorer and the Mountaineer are identical virtually in terms of hardware. The external designs of the two vehices are a little different, with the Mountaineer also having a more luxurious interior. The engine is also different, with the Mountaineer available in a 5.0 L 215 hp Windsor V8 powerplant. This makes the Mounaineer at least $1,000 more expensive than the Explorer. An increase in sales in the second year was brought about by an upgraded 4.0 L 205 hp Cologne V6 powerplant with a 5-speed 5R55E automatic transmission. Sales still lagged behind the Explorer, though.

The Mercury, along with the Explorer, got a major facelift in its second generation. Luxury features were added including a woodgrain finish to its trim, a radio deck in the rear, and a TV/DVD player on its rear seat. As a result, sales drastically increased, as well as brand loyalty. Owners of Mountaineers now intended to replace their old Mountaineers with another Mountaineer. The redesigned look that includes the waterfall grille and barred taillights would eventually lead the way to become Mercury’s new signature look, appearing on subsequent models.

Another redesigning happened in 2006 with more upscale interiors to make up for the void in the market left by the discontinued Lincoln Aviator. The current generation of Mercury Mountaineers also has a frame that has been heavily revised, redesigned wheels, and a navigation system that is DVD based, but does not come with HID lighting anymore.

Used Mercury Mystique

Mercury Mystique 150

The Mercury Mystique was a variant of the Ford Contour that was rebadged when it was introduced in the market in 1995. This 4-door compact sedan lasted until 2000, marketed under the Mercury division of the Ford Motor Company. The concept of the Mystique/Contour came from the Ford Mondeo. The Contour and Mystique filled the void left by the Ford Tempo and Mercury Topaz when they were discontinued in 1995. They were based on the CDW27 platform by Ford. The Mystique was manufactured at the Kansas City Assembly plant of Ford.

The Mercury Mystique was first available in two trims, the entry-level GS and the upscale LS, both of which had a “sport” option. The base model was introduced for the 1997 model year, only to be discontinued after 2 years. Two engines were available for the Mystique, a 2.0 L Zetec I4 125 hp and a 2.5 L Duratec 25 V6 170 hp.

The Mystique, along with the Contour and Mondeo, was targeted as a major project by the Ford Motor Company in Europe. The finished product of the development is a model that is larger than its predecessors, the Topaz and Tempo. When the Mystique was discontinued, no line of cars filled in the gap that it left in the market, at least for the Canadian and U.S. markets. In Mexico, the Mystique was replaced by a locally produced version of the Ford Mondeo developed in Europe. Through its short history, the Mystique still garnered distinction. It was included in the Ten Best list of Car and Driver magazine for three consecutive years, 1995 – 1997.

The Mercury Sable is a brand of cars produced by the Ford Motor Company and marketed under the Mercury brand. The Sable brand was used twice, as a mid-size car from model years 1986 – 2005 model years and a full-size car for the 2008 and 2009 model years. The design of the Sable have been one of the most influential in American automotive history, as its trademark “lightbar”, a lamp with low wattage in between the two front headlamps.

The lightbar became a mainstay in all Mercury car designs, giving the vehicles a very modern, futuristic look, and was later copied by other automobile manufacturing companies. Relatively young in the automotive world, more than 2 million Sabres have already been sold around the world in its 23 year history. To think that it was only a rebadged version of the Ford Taurus.

The Sable was first introduced with two models available, the base GS and the upscale LS. In its first year, more than 300,000 units of the Sable were sold. Several body type offerings have been stopped though the years of the Sabre’s existence, including the station wagon which was stopped in 2004. Meanwhile, the sedan type was made into a fleet vehicle and not for individual sale. The Sable was also awarded several distinctions like inclusion to Car and Driver magazine’s Ten Best list in 1986, 1990, and 1991. Ford chose to make the redesigned Ford Taurus their top priority, giving it more engineering and advertising allocation. In 2009, Ford opted to discontinue the Mercury Sable line.
