Used Porsche 356

Porsche 356 150

The Porsche 356 is the first production car to have rolled out of the assembly lines of the German automaker Porsche SE. Lightweight, the 356 started production in 1948 and was designed as rear-wheel drive, rear-engine sports car. It became available in convertible and hardtop variants.

The Porsche 356 remained in production until April 1965, resulting in total production of 76,000 units, an estimated half of which are still in service today. The continuing innovation in design that had been heaped into the 356 accounts for the car’s durability and popularity.

The car’s suspension, chassis and engine were initially based on another popular German car, the Volkswagen Beetle (Porsche SE has a majority stake in Volkswagen AG) to save on production costs. Eventually, however, the 365 was reengineered and refined for better performance, and by the late 1950s the 365 shared only a few parts with Volkswagen. A new generation of Porsche 356 will reportedly be manufactured in 2013.

Used Porsche 911

Porsche 911 GT 3

The Porsche 911 was introduced in autumn 1963 and remains in production today. This sports car came in fifth in the 1999 international survey for the Car of the Century, after the Ford Model T, the Mini, the Citroen DS and the Volkswagen, all of which are no longer in production.

The 911 is rear-engined and air-cooled like the Volkswagen Beetle where it was based on. Despite the continuing innovation in the car since its introduction, the concept of the 911 remained unchanged in its entire evolution.

The 911 is notable for its victories in racing, rallying and other auto competitions for which the car model was modified as entries by private teams and Porsche AG itself. The major world championship sports car races the 911 has won include Daytona, Targa Florio, Sebring or Nürburgring. The original Porsche 911 classic edition sported a 130 PS (96 kW, 128 hp) flat-6 engine. It had four seats but those at the rear were very small, and thus, the car is usually referred to as a 2+2 not a four-seater.

Used Porsche 912

Porsche 912 150

The Porsche 912 is the entry-level sports car of Porsche AG. Manufactured between 1965 and 1969, the 912 is a compact nimble-handling, four-seat vehicle. It is powered by a 90 SAE hp engine at 5800 rpm.

In terms of fuel economy, the 912 is capable of 30 miles per US gallon (7.8 L/100 km; 36 mpg-imp). This high performance and fuel economy was made possible because of the Porsche 912’s highly efficient petrol engine, low drag and low weight. Although the 912 is just a variant of the Porsche 911, it initially outsold the 911.

The model reappeared as the 912E in 1976, but only in the North American market, to fill the Porsche entry-level marquee with the discontinuation of the 914 and as the official replacement 914 is still being finalized for production. The Porsche 912E draws its power from a 2.0L version of the Volkswagen Beetle air-cooled engine.

Estimated Price Range for Used Porsche 912: $13,000-$25,000

Used Porsche 914

Porsche 914 150

The Porsche 914, a mid-engined sports car, is a collaborative effort between Volkswagen AG and Porsche AG. Manufactured from 1969 to 1976, the car was intended to be sold as a four-cylinder engined Volkswagen replacement to its Karmann Ghia, and as a flat six-cylinder engined successor to the Porsche 912. Both versions, however, were badged and marketed as Porsches in the US.

The Volkswagen variant originally featured an 80 hp (60 kW) fuel-injected 1.7 L flat-4 engine which was based on the Volkswagen air cooled motor. The Porsche’s 914/6 version was powered with a carbureted 110 hp (82 kW) 2.0 L flat-6 engine, a clone from the 1969 911T.

This variant was discontinued in 1972 due to poor sales and rising costs. It was replaced though in 1973 by a model sporting a 95 hp (71 kW) 2.0L, fuel-injected version of the Volkswagen Type 4 engine. American units were equipped with the Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection system to help make the model conform with US emission standards.

Estimated Price Range for Used Porsche 914: $6,000-$52,000
