Used Pontiac G6

Pontiac G6 150

When the Pontiac Grand Am was discontinued in 2004, the Pontiac division of General Motors started production of its replacement, the Pontiac G6. The Pontiac G6 is a mid-size car which shares the GM Epsilon platform with other GM cars, the Chevrolet Malibu and Saab 9-3. The Grand Am was given a more conservative look than its predecessor. For example, the Grand Am’s ribbed cladding and rear spoiler gave way to standard sheet metal in the G6. Added to the G6 was a panoramic sunroof option and a starting system that can be remotely operated. The V6 and GT were available for the G6 when it was first made available. Engine changes happened in the car’s 2007 edition, as well as added safety features such as side torso and curtain airbags.

The launch of the G6 in 2004 was highly publicized as all 276 people who watched The Oprah Winfrey show’s season premier in fall 2004 received a G6. The G6 will last be produced in 2009 for the 2010 model year, after which the Pontiac division will be discontinued altogether.

Used Pontiac G8

Pontiac G8 150

The Pontiac G8 is a relative newcomer to General Motor’s Pontiac division. This rear-wheel drive sedan was released for the 2008 model year and filled the gap that the Pontiac Bonneville (discontinued in 2005) and the Grand Prix (discontinued in 2008) left in the Pontiac lineup. The G8 is Pontiac’s return to production of full-size cars after the Bonneville and the short-lived GTO, which was discontinued after 2006. Despite positive reviews by car publications because of its design that is comparable to European four-door sedans and affordability, sales did not really pick up for this line. With lessened production and cut prices, the G8’s inventory improved, with only 5,000 unsold units as of July 2009. For its 2 year run, more than 30,000 G8 units have been sold.

Due to GM’s bankruptcy filed in early 2009, all Pontiac lines, including the G8 will be discontinued by 2010. Despite reports of its revival as other lines in other GM divisions, no confirmation has been made with regards to any good news about the G8’s fate.

Used Pontiac Grand Am

Pontiac Grand Am 150

When the Pontiac division of General Motors rolled out the first Pontiac Grand Ams, they produced a mid-size car. The name is a combination of what the car is supposed to signify grand prix luxury and Trans-Am performance. The Grand Am was designed to compete with European luxury and sports sedans that were giving GM and other American carmakers a run for their money. The first generation of the Grand Am as a mid-sized car ran for three years, until 1975. From 1978 to 1980, it was downsized to a compact car. Both generations of the Grand Am were based on General Motor’s A platform. In 1980, the Pontiac 6000 replaced it. During its run, it became Pontiac’s number 1 selling car, only to be dislodged by G6, supposedly the 6th generation of Grand Ams, only rebranded. Pontiac plants in Michigan and Atlanta, Georgia manufactured the Grand Am.

The Grand Am was discontinued following calls in the 1970s for more fuel-efficient cars due to the energy crisis. Muscle cars like the Grand Am appear to have been outdated, with competition from European cars being lighter and small, and American competition Ford offering luxury compact cars.

Used Pontiac Grand Prix

Pontiac Grand Prix 150

The Pontiac Grand Prix was first manufactured in 1962 General Motor’s Pontiac division. Along with other full-sized car models, Pontiac also used the Grand Prix brand as a brand of cars in Pontiac’s personal luxury and mid-size car market, making it next to the Bonneville in Pontiac’s product lineup. The first Grand Prix became a merging of the Pontiac Catalina, with its coupe and hardtop model and the Pontiac Bonneville’s trimming. As in other Pontiac vehicles, the Grand Prix received a downsizing treatment in 1978. By 2008, the Grand Prix was still being manufactured when General Motors announced a recall of all Grand Prix GTP models from 1997 to 2003 because of reported engine fires. The next year, the recall extended to Grand Prix GT models as well. As of April 2009, almost 1.5 million Grand Prix cars have been affected by this recall.

The Grand Prix’s GT trim was discontinued in 2008. GXP and base trims were still available, as well as new colors were added to the available models for 2008. For the 2009 model year, the Grand Prix was discontinued altogether and was replaced by the Pontiac G8.

Used Pontiac GTO

Pontiac GTO 150

The Pontiac GTO was produced by the Pontiac division of General Motors made available in the United States for 11 years, from 1964 to 1974. In Australia, it was manufactured by Holden Motors and was available from 2004 until 2006. Short for Gran Turismo Omologato, the Pontiac GTO is considered by car enthusiasts as the first true “muscle car”. The design of the GTO was more or less similar to the Tempest until its last year, when it was more similar to another Pontiac line, the Ventura. The GTO deviated from a policy of GM to limit the engines of intermediate cars’ displacement to 5.4 L. Sales figures of the GTO was constantly high until around 1973, when it faced strong competition from another Pontiac line, the Grand Am. Poor promotion of the GTO also contributed to the slide in sales. Sales improved the next year following the release of the third generation GTO line. However, it still did not meet expectations, thus the line was discontinued without a new model for 1975.

The Pontiac GTO enjoyed a brief revival in 2004. This 2004 model was based on the V platform of the Australian Holden Monaro. Interesting colors such as Phantom Black Metallic, Barbados Blue Metallic, and Quicksilver Metallic, among other colors were introduced. Expectations were high for sales of the revived GTO, but the actual units sold in the United States did not meet the said expectations. Thus, the revived GTO only lasted for 2 more model years.
