Volvo S60 150

A compact executive sedan, the Volvo S60, manifests the marked departure of autos made by Volvo Cars from their stereotype boxy design during the 1980s and the 1990s. The S60, launched in 2000, sports a design bearing the influence of British designer Peter Horbury and largely based upon the stylish Volvo S80. The design shift was so dramatic that Volvo Cars decided to market the S60 under the thematic campaign “Revolvolution”.

The 2010 iteration of the S60 second generation is expected to even sport a totally new look and strut Volvo’s new design concept already previewed in the Volvo XC60. Mechanically, the Volvo S60 was assembled on the P2 platform like the S80, XC90 and the V70. A refreshed S60 rolled out of the production lines in 2005. The enhancements include new headlights and an updated exterior sporting body colored bumpers and side moldings. In addition, the T5 engine’s power was boosted by 10 bhp.

Volvo S70 150

The Volvo S70, a mid-size luxury car, represents the continuing evolution of automobiles from Volvo Cars into more stylish vehicles. The Swedish automaker marketed the S70 between 1997 and 2000 under two badges the S70 sedan and the V70 station wagon.

Both variants mainly showcased revised suspensions and new styling of the Volvo 850s that were sold from 1993 to 1997. Even as the S70s were mere updated iterations of the 850s, an S70 model sported more rounded body styles than the Volvo 850.

The S70 came in six trim levels: Base, SE, GL, GLT, T5 and the R exclusively sold in Europe. Exterior features, in addition to a rounder front end, included a reshaped hood and new headlights. Side and dual front airbags were the innovations in the S70’s new interior. Among the introductions in the Volvo S70 mechanical department is a new electronic brake modulation system to help optimize performance.

Volvo S80 150

Accident-prone drivers will feel more secure with the Volvo S80. This executive sedan from the Swedish auto manufacturer Volvo Cars has one of the best ratings in crash tests. The first-generation S80s (1998–2005) held this distinction for five years, while the second generation scored the highest in a 2007 crash safety test for head-on, rear and side collisions.

This stellar safety performance of the second-generation S80 results from the car’s improved engineering brought partly by a more rigid, stiffer chassis. First generation S80s were exclusively available in sedans, but a station wagon version was added in the second iteration which was actually the estate variant of the V70 series.

This shakeup partly reflects a major product overhaul going on at Volvo to come up with large, luxurious sedans and wagons. Styling of the Volvo S80 is distinctive for its tail lights and belt lines that narrow as they go up curves and points, a characteristic later seen in the entire Volvo lineup.

Used Volvo V40

Volvo V40 150

The Volvo V40 is the station wagon version of the first-generation S40, a range of compact executive autos that Volvo Cars of Sweden launched in 1995. The S40 saloon was the V40’s stable mate in this iteration.

This wagon was replaced by the V50 estate in the next generation that came out in 2004, but not before the V40 received an accolade as the “Most Beautiful Estate Car in the World” in an award ceremony in Italy.

The V40 was the first car of Volvo to be introduced under the company’s British design director Peter Horbury. He was mainly responsible for the shift to the more stylish Volvo car designs from the traditional boxy style. The S40 series including the Volvo V40 wagon underwent some technical improvements in 2001. These enhancements included larger brake discs, improved engine management, revised rear suspension, new front suspension and steering, larger tires, and extra safety features.
