Engine

Volkswagen decided to use a 1.4 liter engine capable of a total output of 148 horsepower coupled with a 101 horsepower electric motor. The petrol engine is turbocharged and uses a direct injection system while the electric motor uses an 8.8 kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery.

When running with the hybrid system on, the total power output goes up to 201 horsepower. Power distribution is handled by a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Drive & Handling

Handling of the GTE is relatively similar to the feel of its petrol brothers. The Golf GTE has a sporty feel with a firm road grip and agility when steering thanks to the improved suspensions and wider tiers.

Its redesigned front bumper and bonnet managed to improve the frontal downforce, enhancing its stability.

Exterior

Looking at the exterior, the GTE can be easily mistaken for any other version of the series. It comes with the same thing front grille between the narrow and aggressive headlights and chromed elements on the side intakes of the front bumper.

The rear bumper has been elevated by a couple of inches while the taillights have been extended to reach the sides.

Interior

The interior uses a full black theme with chromed elements on the driving wheel, doors and central panel.

All the gauges have been placed carefully behind the wheel for better visibility. The central area features a generous LCD display and controls. The seats have been covered with a textured textile material.

The new Golf GTE delivers more power than what people might expect from a hybrid car. Its fuel economy is respectable despite the fact that it comes with a 1.4 turbocharged engine.
