A compact executive automobile, the BMW 3-Series was launched in 1975 and eventually emerged as BMW’s best selling car. This series, consisting of five different generations in five varying body styles, accounted for almost 40% of BMW’s 2005 car sales. First in the BMW 3-Series is the E21 line which went into production in 1975 till 1983 as a two door model featuring a new center console design angled towards the driver that has become a BMW design standard for many years.

Another BMW 3-Series variant is the E30 sold as a sedan from 1982 to 1991 and as a convertible in 1993. In 1989, the most powerful E30 was launched in the US as the M3 packing 192 hp S14 straight-4 with a four-valve head. The BMW 3-Series also boasts of its E36 which was manufactured from 1991 to 2000 and marketed as a compact executive car/entry-level luxury car.
