The Audi S4 is associated with two Audi car generations, first with the Audi 100 variants and the Audi A4 series. In both, the S4 is positioned as the high performance sports version. There are three body configurations for the Audi S4. One is as estate car or station wagon that Audi terms as the five-door, five-seater Avant. Another is as a four-door, five seat saloon or sedan, and finally a two-door, four-seater Cabriolet or convertible.
Regardless of body types, all Audi S4 internal combustion engines are front mounted, orientated longitudinally. The transmission, whether manual or automatic, are placed at the engine’s rear likewise orientated longitudinally as a transaxle. As in other Audi “S” vehicle series, the S4 comes only with the quattro 4WD (four-wheel drive) system. Some Audi S4, however, use the torsen-based, permanent 4WD while other models utilize a transfer-box-based 4WD. Another distinguishing feature of the Audi S4 is its more powerful internal combustion engine.
