The NSX dazzled the auto market in North America when it was introduced by Honda Motor’s luxury car division Acura in 1990. The Acura NSX was the first car to feature, a suspension and body incorporating a revolutionary extruded exotic aluminum alloy frame and an all-aluminum chassis. Almost 200 kg in weight was saved in the car by the usage of aluminum in car’s the body alone compared to using steel. An added 20 kg weight saving was realized with the use of an aluminum suspension.
The mid-engined, rear-wheel drive NSX also had an all-aluminum V6 gasoline engine featuring Honda’s VTEC (variable valve timing and lift electronic control) system which was a novel feature in US cars. Another desirable feature included a suspension compliance pivot that kept wheel alignment changes at near-zero value. In addition, titanium connecting rods in the engine permitted reliable high-rpm operation. The NSX likewise boasted of an independent, an electric power steering system, and a four-channel anti-lock brake system.
