The name of this town was given by John Carman, its founder, from his hometown of Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England. Thus, the origin of the name of the town of Hempstead.
Based on the census’ statistics, Hempstead hosts various races in this town. Different ethnic groups comprise the population who reside here. Though a largely white population live here, other groups include African-Americans, Asians, Native Americans, Latinos, Pacific Islanders and other races from different parts of the globe.
Hempstead is also known as one of the largest single employers of Long Island. This town is known to have 22 villages and 35 Hamlets. The town of Hempstead was once dominated by Republicans. Though in recent years, and as time passed, the town has shifted its allegiance to the Democrats.
