2012 Infiniti G

According to test drivers and reviewers, the 2012 Infiniti G is just the thing for those who want an upscale midsize car that rides like a sports car.

It does lack room for cargo. The Infiniti G convertible and coupe models are especially lacking when it comes to space. According to those who tested it, the back seats in these models aren’t enough for children.

Engine

The base G25 has a 2.5 liter engine that delivers 218 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 187 lbs-ft of torque. The G37, a 3.7 liter engine and delivers 328 horsepower at 7000 rpm and 269 lbs-ft of torque, the G37 coupe has a 3.7 liter engine and puts out 330 horsepower at 7000 rpm with 270 lbs-ft of torque and the G37 convertible has a 3.7 liter engine that gives 325 horsepower at 7000 rpm with 267 pound feet of torque.

Finally, the IPL has a 3.7 liter engine that gives you 348 horsepower at 7400 rpm at 276 lbs-ft of torque. All Infiniti G models are rear wheel drive, but you have the option to choose all wheel drive, except for the IPL coupe and convertible.

Performance

The G comes with seven speed automatic transmission that has a manual mode. A six speed manual transmission comes with the IPL as well as the G37 Sport. The different models have different fuel economy ratings, with the G25 sedan getting the best mileage with 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

Many find the G25 a powerful car, but if you really want serious speed they could opt for the IPL coupe. With the power, comes great handling and confident brakes. The only challenge was that the manual transmission could be balky.

Exterior

The G comes with three body types, the sedan, coupe and convertible; and five different trims: the G25 and G37 sedans, the G37 and IPL coupes and the G37 convertible. All have a V6 engine with differing horsepower output. Reviewers appreciate the assertive and sporty looks of the Infiniti G. They find that it really stands out with subtlety, and not in an ostentatious way.

Interior

You cannot get around the Infiniti G’s lack of space for passengers and cargo, though people appreciated the craftsmanship. Leather seats come standard in the Infiniti G. One other feature that comes standard on all Infiniti G trims is satellite radio. The absence of flash and too much variety is what people liked about the Infiniti G.

It makes the car much easier to operate. The sedan offers 13.5 cubic feet of trunk space, which is average, but the trunk space for the coupe and the convertible is much less. The coupe has 7.4 cubic feet, while the convertible has 10.3 cubic feet, when the top is down, you get less than 2 cubic feet.

Safety

The G received good marks for safety. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it a “good” for frontal offset and side impact crash test results, “marginal” for the rear crash protection and “acceptable” for its roof strength test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it highest marks in the rollover test.

Reliability

J.D. Power gave the G an over-all reliability score of three and half out of five. The car comes with a four year or 60,000 mile basic warranty and a six year or 70,000 mile powertrain warranty. You can count on four years or unlimited miles of roadside service.

Pros

Many found the car really fun to drive. It’s powerful and zippy and its interior is well made.

Cons

Not enough space

Competition

The small luxury sedan segment is quickly filling up. Joining the G25 are the likes of the Volvo S60 (MSRP $31,300; 20 city / 30 hwy), the Lexus IS250 (MSRP $33,795; 19 city / 28 hwy), and the BMW 328i (MSRP $34,900; 23 city / 33 hwy).
