Great advice, but I wanted some clarity on the necessity of writing a separate check for the “principal” each month. Is there really any benefit to doing this? I can see how you would pay a few more dollars of interest the first month you did this, but since they are applying anything extra to the next month’s payment there would be no further benefit once the monthly cycle kicks in. Make sense or am I off base here? Think about it.
